True statement with Pete's playbook. His contract is probably closer to proper value with damn near every other OC in the league.

I just don't think people understand how long it will take to unwind this. It will take a full year of being committed to a rebuild just to get us in a situation where we can start the cap rebuild. That's 2 years, min, but likely more like 3 (or 4 to totally clear up our cap situation).

We essentially have to go full bad news bears for 2 years, with nothing but UDFAs. We have to just tank and tank HARD for 2 full years.

THEN...we have 2 more years after that of still being fricked by the cap but it easing up.

All the cap is fake people, to a certain degree yes, but where we are, it isn't. We've gone so overboard with this bullshite that we are fricked, we cannot make major moves without it costing us for 4 years.

Kicking the can was understandable when the Saints were Super Bowl contenders but not now. Time to pay the piper so a rebuild can happen.

The cap has never really prevented the saints from making the moves they wanted to make.

What’s hurting the saints is busts along the offensive line and piss poor coaching. Say what you want about loomis, but he’s always made the cap work in the saints favor.

The cap prevented us from signing our home grown top players hitting the prime of their careers. We then replaced them with aging less expensive vets.

I get it, but my point is that those aging vets aren’t the issue right now.

We lost Hendrickson and Williams and replaced them with Granderson and Maye. Neither of those guys are the problem on the current saints roster.

ETA: just using that as an example.

All he has done is push money down the road and increase the impact when we do pay the piper.

The other option is that we just eat 15-30% of our cap every year on dead money, which means we'll never be able to compete for a title.

I understand what you're saying, but there isn't a GM or HC that is going to do this in today's world.

If this year is our apex under this model, we're going to have to. We suck and have the cap situation of a title contender.

I just don't see them explaining a complete rebuild to the owners knowing in all likelihood they are going to get canned. Building teams for runs today are built on three year models. Selling a five or six year rebuild is hard especially since the GM responsible for this is still with the team.

Is coaching restricted by the cap? Coaching is much more of an issue for us than being hamstrung by the cap.

And before it’s mentioned, I won’t agree with the proposition that no coach would want the job due to our cap situation. Coaches have huge egos, enjoy getting paid millions and young hungry ones are eager to prove themselves.

Should have made that decision before committing to Carr though. Could have identified younger players to build around and trade veterans.

Carr: $35.7M / $52.8M
Hill: $15.8M / $16.9M

Big hits that can be cut for slight cap relief:

Kamara: $18.9M / $17.2M
Davis: $18.2M / $17.2M
Maye: $9.9M / $8.5M
J. Johnson: $7.0M / $6.5M
Mathieu: $12.1M / $10.4M
C. Granderson: $12.5M / 10.1M

It smells like restructuring up in here. Watch out for the Saints in 2037!

3 years - that is the time it'll take for us (and the restructures) to be safe.

1. Restructuring Cam saves 9mil
2. Restructuring Lattimore saves 11mil
3. Post June 1 Trade/Cut Ram saves 17mil (10mil dead)
4. Plan to always restructure Carr saves 23mil
5. Restructuring Cesar saves 6mil
6. Restructuring Erik saves 6mil

Restructuring only works if the players are worth pushing the can 3-4 years...

We can’t kick the can anymore. Several years of doing so to remain contenders means we have few contracts that can be reworked again. N this is about to be a dark 2-3 years for Saints football. It’s time for a mercy kill now and blow it all up.
