Per Rotoworld: New Saints LBs coach Mike Nolan said he is "excited about" 2015 first-round LB Stephone Anthony.

Anthony fell deep into the doghouse last season, playing just 133 defensive snaps after seeing 990 as a rookie. Nolan's arrival appears to have wiped the slate clean, however. "I've gotten to know Anthony on a personal level, as well as a football level in meetings, I like him," Nolan said. "Looking at tape of him, whether it was last year against Tampa Bay where he played the entire football game, whether it was the year before, he made a lot of plays." Nolan added he thinks Anthony is best suited to play in the middle. The Saints added both A.J. Klein and Manti Te'o this offseason, but they would probably prefer the former first-rounder earning the starting MLB job.

Hoping it all comes together in year 3

That would be ideal if it was a scheme or coaching issue and Anthony came back around. Would certainly like to not have another 1st round bust chalked up to the Saints draft history.

Now that Vitt is finally gone maybe we can get a little out of Anthony

Well this would be massive. Would be like an extra draft pick.

I mean part of it has to be Vitt right? In a decade we had like 3 serviceable to good linebackers.

This part is true if and only if they think Klein would be a good SLB.

I'm about 90% sure that when they talked to people about the LB coach job they made sure that the prospects had a plan for Anthony. I'd imagine fixing him is a big part of what Payton is demanding from Nolan.

And all of them were already established when they came here. He developed none of them, that I remember.

I have 0 fricks to give about this. Either get this stupid frick to learn how to diagnose plays, or move on from him.

I mean, He lead the team in tackles in 2015. That's got to count for something.

I really don't have any doubt that with competent coaching, Anthony can and will be our starter.

I would disagree with you heavily on this. Him liking Anthony on a personal level tells me Stephone has a good head on his shoulders, which is a big deal in my opinion.

He has to turn it around this year. If Nolan can't get him right then we may as well cut him loose next year.

Does Nolan have a secret formula to melt the concrete around Anthony's feet?

He's not stupid. Allen ran a completely different scheme from Ryan, which was nothing like he did at Clemson either.

He struggled to pick up the concepts but did eventually earn playing time.

Wut

That's a pretty important relationship to have when trying to develop a player. Anthony is probably the biggest X factor that can sway this defense in a positive direction if he plays to his potential

I could see the coaches talking him up as trade bait after the first round of cuts and injuries in the preseason. I think the addition of Klein has made him expendable.

All that being said, I hope he does great after a bit of a sophomore slump. Hopefully the continuity of Dennis Allen and addition of Nolan will get the best out of Anthony.

at his moment, I'm more intrigued with what the 2015 class can do as opposed to the 2017 class. They're going into year 3, where you make or break...

Can Anthony improve and play as a natural MLB?
Can Kikaha and PJ Williams stay healthy and contribute like they've shown?
Can Davison maintain his production and be a stout nose tackle?
Can Swann get over his concussion issues and contribute?

If you say yes to all of those than we're going to the playoffs easily.

Other than having a decent rookie year, the only play he was involved in that sticks out in my mind was when he let that running back (don't recall which one, it was one of our divisional opponents) slip past him for the easy touchdown reception. By the time he realized what happened the ref had already blown the whistle. I had already written him off to be honest. If Nolan can make him at least serviceable it would be a win.
