So does this mean the Saints could actually cut him loose? I don’t think it is possible in 25. They cannot roll with Rattled/Hay-ner. They would have to sign a broken down loser (think Tommy Kramer, or if you’re too young, Kirk Cousins) so what would be the point?

What would be the point of extending Carr? Cut him June first and then tank. Draft a QB next year and roll with them.

yeah I don't blame him for not wanting to take a cut, that's on our dumb arse FO

but the part about what you've put on tape is good? Get fricked

I wouldn’t expect him to take a pay cut as in forfeiting money. The most we can ask of these guys is to restructure their contracts to the benefit of the team. That is what Brees used to do.

Nobody here would take a pay cut to help cover up mistakes of our employer. He’s under no obligation to do so and honestly he shouldn’t.

Totally agree, it’s Loomis and by default Gayle’s fault they are in this boat.

It’s not like the relief Carr could offer would go to a key free agent signing.

Cart has the right attitude: frick the Saints.

Brees forced a franchise tag that cost us Carl Nix and himself a much better chance at a 2nd ring. Don’t make Brees into a financial martyr for the Saints. He was no Brady with the Pats on team friendly deals.

i think we can designate two players as post june 1st cuts for cap deadline purposes.

post june 1st designations
carr
ramzyck

pre june 1st cuts (could also restructure shaheed and werner instead, would clear more cap space if the following two players were post june 1st cuts, if cut at all.)
saunders
wilson jr

restructure
mccoy
ruiz

actual post june 1st cuts
jordan
hill
shepherd

puts us 23mil under with more players that can be cut if needed after june 1st and will get more towards the cap than cutting them before, hence the restructures on mccoy and ruiz, which aren't cap killers. cutting matheui and williams after june 1st would put us at 32.5 under.

if we restructured carr instead of cutting him, it would work out about the same cap wise if we cut him next year.

eta: it doesn't look like we're gonna win anything anytime soon, so i would just cut him now and see what we have with rattler in a full season with some wrs, an oline and some experience under his belt. carr is the better qb right now, but it isn't gonna help us long term to keep him around. rattler is good enough to find out what we have with him. he's done a good enough job with a bad situation.

Those moves and Aaron Glenn as coach will coast the Saints 25,000 season tickets next year.

It’s why I think Brady might be the hire and we’ll give him a 7 year deal.

i like idea of brady and giving rattler a shot since we prolly aren't gonna be good enough for someone like carr to make a difference. he's better qb than rattler right now, but i would like to see what we have with him since we aren't making a playoff run anyway. he's done a solid job for a rookie in a bad situation with a sketchy oline and no wrs.

An actual NFL oline Would help if we're going to judge him fairly

Maybe this is his plan for getting out of New Orleans, where he knows a rebuild is definitely happening?

Carr should be a post June 1 cut.

It really doesn’t have anything to do with his play. His play has been good, IMO.

But his value to this org is zero due to the state of the rest of the org. Frankly, it’s negative due to his contract.

Taking the hit now is necessary.

Carr is lucky he has guaranteed money, he would take a pay cut if he only got paid for games he played this year. But at $30M he is low in QB salary among other starters with new contracts.

I wouldn’t if I was him either. MT got paid and didn’t have surgery or rehabbed his injury and the Saints didn’t do shite.

By all reports, Carr worked hard and wanted to get back on the field.

That would be the most idiotic thing you could do. A new coach 7 years?

I wouldn’t give Sean Payton 7 years.

Watson in Cleveland suffered a setback that may cost him the entirety of 25. the Browns are morons enough that a trade could be worked out to ship Carr to them.

and I do not dislike Carr - protection has been horrendous for him and his ability to stay healthy.

puts us 23mil under

Those designated post 6/01 cuts don't help the cap now. They have to be compliant by March 12th, and even if you designate Carr & Ram as post 6/01, the entire cut will hit when it's made and the relief happens on 6/01.

Also, I suspect Ram renegotiates his deal to be league min, and we turn ~$17M of his current salary into a roster bonus due on opening day. That knocks his current cap figure down to $12M (from $29M). Then before that roster bonus becomes due, he retires saving another $1M; but also putting $12M on the 2026 books (still down from $26M that year)
