Sean Payton decided he didn't want to coach the Saints anymore, and got a studio job to stay near the game and make money. I have no 100% knowledge, but I would assume he didn't receive any more money from the Saints after he retired. He wasn't coaching for us.
A year later, he decides he wants to coach somewhere else. And we get a low first and possibly a high 2nd in return for that.
We'd all love for the Saints to be on the receiving end of a Rickey Williams or Hershel Walker deal, but that wasn't happening. As it stands, we get a couple likely starters in return for a guy leaving Fox.

I think people heard so much about 2 1sts and whatnot that they really convinced themselves that’s what would happen. Like others have said, most had rationalized that we were getting a couple of 2nds at best. This trade is great even though giving up the third still really bugs me.

There are 32 picks in the first round of the 2023 draft. Miami forfeited their pick so only 31 picks will be made in the first round.
Pick #29 is within pick #1 and Pick #31 so it is in fact a 1st round pick.
One could argue that Chicago will get an extra 1st round pick with their #33 pick because it will actually be the 32nd pick in the draft. However the first round will end after 31 picks have been made and technically Chicago will be picking 1st in the second round Pick #33 but actually the 32nd pick in the draft.
I know it's all confusing for some of you but relax it will be ok.

2023 1st and swapping a 2024 3rd for a 2024 2nd works for me as well.
The whiners are going to whine no matter what. They will tell you the Saints should have held out and let Payton sit till after 2024 when he could sign anywhere with no compensation to the Saints.
That in itself shows how uneducated they are.

I personally believe that there were a couple things at play here:
1. The draft compensation market wasn’t what we thought it would be. The really bad teams with very high 1st rd picks were not willing to give that up for SP.
2. SP only really wanted certain jobs so the market was smaller than the available openings. There were rumblings that SP really wanted Russ when he was still the coach so it seems reasonable that Denver was always the job he had his eye on.
Dallas was the Wildcard for obvious reasons but I don’t think Jerry could quite justify pulling the trigger. If they would have lost in 1st rd then maybe.

The average Saints poster isn't overly experienced in making a deal.
Saints gave Peyton all the power and leverage. You can only do so much at that point. I still would've maybe waited till next year to see what the market would offer though. It is what it is.

I'm not crazy about throwing in the 3rd but I'm just glad we actually got something for Payton. Anyone who thought he was coming back, we would get multiple firsts, or that he had a wide range of teams going after him was in fantasy land. We are lucky he didn't just go back to Fox.

Solid trade. I was listening to The Herd and he spoke with Payton and one of his concerns was cap flexibility. That seems strange being as though Saints overpaid for an aging Brees and Taysom Hill all are guys Payton stood by.

All depends on what we do with the 29th pick.
