SIAP... didn’t see it anywhere. Entire newsroom was laid off. Haven’t seen anything from Jazzy Jeff yet but Katzenstein tweeted he’s out

LINK

quote:

An official from Advance told Times-Picayune employees Thursday afternoon that they would all be laid off as part of the deal, according to three staffers. The journalists will keep their jobs for the next 60 days as the deal is finalized and the merging of the brands is completed, they said. Staffers will have the chance to apply for new jobs in the unified newsroom. But the details of that process, including how many positions might be available, remain thin.

Times-Picayune staffers were shocked, employees told VICE News, with some crying in the newsroom and others tweeting out the sad news. The staff went to a bar across the street to commiserate about the work the newspaper had produced amid intense financial pressure in recent years.

“We’re drinking now,” one former staffer said on Thursday night. “There’s not much else to do.”

No one working for a newspaper should be shocked when they lose their job

I would never wish someone to be fired for thinking they are a colossal douche. I understand that they have a family to support. However as a fan, Duncan burned his bridge with me a long time ago and I am ready for his to write biased content with average writing skills for someone else’s team. He should have been gone 10 years ago.

Hopefully the Advocate hires Luke Johnson back in some capacity. He’s one of the best sports writers around

He was with the Advocate for a few years before jumping to the times-picayune to be their saints beat writer.

Yep.

That’s the irony of the situation. If the paper had supported real journalism, they wouldn’t have this problem

This. I was a journalist once and got laid off, along with three others, at 25. I changed professions. If I was giving advice to those guys I’d tell them to get out. It really is a dying industry. Newspapers want young idiots fresh out of college that they can pay to work abysmal hours and pay $26,000 because they don’t know any better.

It was a good profession 20 years ago. Not so much now. They need to find something else to do and it sucks for some like Jeff Duncan who is probably too old to switch.

Not Saints related, but I have no sympathy for race baiting Jarvis DeBerry. Hopefully The Advocate does not bring him on.

I don’t disagree with you, but it’s very sad and is further evidence of the dumbing down of America. People don’f read, they tweet garbage and form their opinions based on what paid hacks like Sean Hannity tell them.

The Advocate will love him then because that's all they're about.

I disagree in this situation. Normally, layoffs are rumored in advance and often tied to known financial circumstances (ad sales, share price, etc.). Word spreads in the newsroom that things are tightening and management needs to trim.

Here, by every account, the news came out of left field and affected the whole organization. There are WARN Act implications, no one has a rehire guarantee, and the entire company will cease to exist.

So yeah, this is shocking.

The TP is a an old and legendary paper, and is sad to see it go, and the harsh reality that the newspaper industry is dying everywhere and must have a strong digital advertising base to survive.

That’s because most of what the MSM reports is fake news. Liberal hacks like you are mad that there are now alternatives to the MSM.

Agreed. Having also worked at newspapers, I can tell you they are now more propaganda than straight facts. That's the main reason they're in a death spiral. They quit reporting things impartially. They have an agenda that doesn't fit with the majority of mainstream America, the people who could actually afford to buy their product if it was worthwhile.

That is why they won' be laid off for 60 days. If they had just walked in and laid off the entire staff or majority they would have to pay them 60 days of their pay. There are ways around this, I think as long as they don't lay off more than 10% at a time they don't have to give any warning.
