If the Lakers back out of the deal that would mean -- barring another agreement -- they would start the season without AD. They aren't going to risk it by attempting to alter the deal agreed upon.

There are other ways they'll try to create salary but I doubt this is one of them.

Unless they’re sending us Kuzma, Griffin shouldn’t even pick up the phone

That's if the deal were to push to July 30

This new push is to add players...not move the date back

Is it a realistic possibility that they could say frick it, and send Kuzma?

Only if no one helps them take those contracts off their hands. That’s probably their last resort.

They could. It would open up space and let them bump the date of the trade back.

But it would take away what is currently projected as a starter on a controlled contract. Meaning they may get a third max guy but they are still stuck digging up two starters and a bunch of reserves on minimum contracts, the room exception, the biannual exception, and the mid level exception.

The trade is not official yet.

Though it would be a bad move for the Lakers to force a rework.

This is an understatement. The Lakers are a team that basically live off of trading for other teams' players/stars. Burning that bridge eternally screws them.

although if I'm the Lakers, this is what I'd do. I'd go back on the trade, then fire Pelinka, and make him the scapegoat, and try to save face

I think they are beyond that point.

As of now, they “have” AD. They back out of the trade and they lose him, probably lose LeBron, and their fan base makes the Rodney King riots look like a parade.

Silver would bring the hammer down on them. You wanna talk about "bad faith"? Hoo boy.

And immediately LeBron would demand a trade.

As it would make it impossible for the Pels to deal with them again and it would turn the Lakers into a pariah for the foreseeable future. As no amount of glamour in that market is going to convince a star to jump into that fire. And no team is going to want to trade with them for now. And if anyone thought that locker was toxic last year, drag Hart, Ball, and Ingram back after they have all been happy to get out and the Ball’s especially have been burning bridges on the way out.

Well, if we're going down this rabbit hole...

Maybe then AD would want to stay and team with Zion to rule the NBA.

That wouldn't be an FO call, that'd be ownership. No one would deal with them until the buss's sold the team.
