Will Guillory: Why the Pelicans stayed (mostly) quiet during the NBA trade deadline

A couple of interesting bits in this article:
Griff obviously has reasons to believe that we can re-sign Richardson.
Edit: Guillory has clarified that he only meant that we were keeping Richardson for the rest of the season (instead of waiving him).
It turned out that The Athletic's Raptors beat writer was correct that Toronto would insist on Herb + either Dyson or Trey, and Will Guillory was correct that we wouldn't do that.
Which I think is the correct take. I love Herb, but Dyson is going to be better. Trey gets better every week. We still have nine players age 25 or younger (but let's subtract Jaxson and call it eight), and those players will improve by next season. Zion, BI, Naji, Jose, Trey, and Kira all made nice improvements to their games this season; Dyson is clearly going to get better; and even Herb, who suffered from a sophomore slump for a while, has really returned to form and is poised to get even better.
We should really be top contenders next season, if we can fix the center position in the offseason.
But I don't really agree with Guillory. We didn't decide not to push in some more chips -- we just could get the deal done with the Raptors. Because everything we read said that we were pushing hard for Anunoby.
I really don't understand what happened in Toronto. The Raptors were pumping potential Anunoby deals left and right and had three teams highly interested (including us), and then wouldn't deal him. In fact, despite the fact that they are in 10th place in the East and 13.5 games back, they were buyers at the deadline, not sellers.
That's the kind of thing that really changes other GMs' opinions about you, Masai. Don't all but announce to the league that you're going to trade a player, constantly leak to Shams and Woj about all the teams that want him and the bidding war that you've got going on, and then say that you were just messing with everyone and had your fingers crossed the whole time.

While Richardson, 29, is in the final year of his contract, a team source confirmed the Pelicans plan to keep him on the roster after this deal.

were the Pelicans really that interested or was Toronto spilling b.s. to try and drive up the price on Memphis?

If we sign JR to a deal then all the people complaining about avoiding the tax can chill. We’d probably sign him to a 1-2 year deal for around the same money devonte was going to make except JR is much more highly viewed around the league and would be salary matching in a future deal

lets just say this, we're gonna have a plethora of young guys at guard, but it is time to move them for a big man.
CJ: 35.8mi
Ingram: 33.8mil
Zion: 33.5mil (assuming not the supermax)
JV: 15.4mil
Nance: 10.375mil
Daniels: 5.8mil
Lewis: 5.7mil
Murphy: 3.36mil
Hernangomez: 2.56mil
Marshall: 1.93mil
Jones: 1.83mil
Alvarado: 1.83mil
Free agents:
Richardson: UFA
Hayes: RFA
GT: 5.4mil (decline option)
So we have:
PG: McCollum, Daniels, Alvarado, Lewis
SG: Jones, Marshall, Murphy
SF: Ingram, Murphy, Marshall
PF: Williamson, Murphy, Liddell
C: JV, Hernangomez
That's not including Richardson, who would create a further logjam at guard.
I really like our guys, they're all so easy to root for...but its time to move 2 of Lewis, Alvarado, and Marshall if the intent is to keep Richardson.

JR would be signed to have salary to move later

Guillory just clarified that he meant after the trade not the season meaning the Pels will not be buying him out

Yeah, I saw that. I will edit my OP.

The thing I really like about this signing is it improves the Pels bench in the area of most need, but also let’s the Pels have a ton of flexibility going into next season regarding tax or no tax based on how they decide to handle JV, Herb, Naji, JR, Jax, Kira, Billy, Temple, and picks/trades.
That lets this squad have a shot at competing without hamstringing mgmt into a particular direction, so they can make decisions based on results.

Given Nance has been hurt a lot lately, it is likely an honest omission.

That backup PF position is a pretty glaring issue, particularly with Zion being a guy that likely benefits from fewer minutes. Love Trey, but he is a tall SG and just gets killed down low. Maybe Liddell is the answer, but he’s only 6’5.5” although he has a 8’10” standing reach and is stoutly built at 240 or so. Still, that’s scary thin behind a max player that has missed so much time and it has already really hurt the Pels this year.

Thats why i wanted to move for chris boucher. makes ~11/yr. maybe we could get him this offseason for kira + temple if toronto wants to shed future money

Why didn't the pels get in on vanderbilt and beasley?
The lakers made out with bamba, Vanderbilt, and beasley.

He's played 46 of 56 games. Sure as hell wish BI and Zion would only be hurt as often as Larry.

Yeah and even still, he's a "small ball 5" moreso than a 4, we REALLY needed a big defender or someone who can space. that is a GLARING weakness compared to the guard/wing spots

From all intel coming out it seems we had two options, either one big move, or send the 2nds for Rich
Doesn’t seem like they were willing to give up a 1st for anything but a big move, which makes even more sense right now because we are the only ones pretty much left in the “contender” bracket that could make a huge move and outbid anyone else.

For what it seems like he wanted, we couldn't get there. I just don't know why he wanted that over draft assets. I'd assume he'd want to tank next season and not try to be good, but who knows.

Exactly. I also think it will be easier for Brooklyn to trade Bridges for mostly picks in the offseason vs. yesterday. Yesterday they needed as good of a player as possible in return to show something after sending out KD.
This summer JV, Kira, Naji and a bunch of picks for Bridges and Claxton after the Nets flame out in the playoffs is probably an easier sell because it will be seen as a path towards finding another star player.
