Had to have known that was happening when Dame publicly said that's who he wanted.

I don't know if Griffin was waiting to see what would happen with Billups, but if thats the case, it would seem like we'd get an announcement pretty soon.
There's nothing else holding us up, unless Griffin surprises everyone like last year.

No, I'm pretty sure they're locked into Lee and have been from the start.

Really struggle to see how he is going to magically get more out of the Trailblazers than Stotts.
Feels like a situation where Portland HAD to do something so they did the thing most organizations do and fired the coach.
Much like in NO, the roster is the main problem, not the coach. There's simply just a hard ceiling on what buy-in and scheme can do to for a roster. Fact I either you have the talent or you don't, and only once you have the talent does the coaching really elevate you.
People point to Atlanta, but all the coach change did was better utilize the talent the FO got and generate buy-in. TBF buy-in is important, so is proper scheming, but Atlanta isn't where they are without Shlenck hitting it out the park with personnel moves the last couple seasons(that and injuries to key teams).

Yeah it seems like it’s been Lee or Vaughn from the start. No change so far to me.

I suspect having gone through a search within the last 12 mos that the Pelicans have a fairly good idea on who they want as head coach. As the dominoes have fallen I’m confident (hoping?) it’s Lee. Though the smoke around Vaughn and his connection to Langdon has me second guessing that.

Nothing should be holding up a Lee agreement

Reasons for the agreement to be held up: A championship this year gets him leverage for more money or fewer team option years?
Reasons for announcing the agreement being held up: Lee doesn't want to be a distraction to a team trying to win a title.
Both of those are flimsy but they exist. There's even less holding up Vaughn becoming the coach.

I've talked to a lot of people and the Pelicans have two really good candidates on their hands with Charles Lee and Jacques Vaughn. I'm not sure who they move forward with but I feel very good about them being able to connect with and elevate the players on the roster.
The key will be the front office actually providing them good players to elevate. The roster is more important than this hire and there needs to be a sense of urgency in upgrading it.

yeah if we want Vaughn we'd have hired him I reckon. looks like Lee is our guy

Jamahl Mosley is leaving the Mavs. He has a relationship with Griff from Cleveland days, and is highly respected around the league. Hopefully they're able to add him to the staff.

Seems like the Vaughn leaks are to try to rush Lee.
If we wanted vaugh we would have hired him already

Are they really leaks? This all started from Woj or Shams saying we were interviewing both Vaughn and Lee. It's all the bloggers and beat writers that have run with Vaughn.

I spoke to the great Brent Barry today about Jacque Vaughn. Barry and Vaughn won a championship in San Antonio in 2007 and also played together the following year. Barry is currently the Vice President of Basketball Operations in SA. Here's what he had to say about Vaughn:

All we’ve learned is that JV is liked by his friends.
WHO GIVES A shite?!
One team hired him, he was abysmal, and they fired him.
Another team gave him the interim title, and then chose to not hire him.
frick Griff and Langdon if they hire Jacque Vaughn
It will literally be 3 retread coaches in a row they hired after those coaches sucked arse prior to coming here. It’s insane that they will do the same shite over and over again.

I think what we’ve learned is it’s really hard to get useful information for projecting an assistant as head coach. Like you said, all we get are glowing reports from friends. I think that’s part of why coaching trees are seen as important.

Big props to Shamit, though. He's putting in more work to get info on Vaughn than the people who actually cover the team for a living.

Bump
It’s Tues 1030am, and the last post in the “Official” Coaching Search Thread was made on Saturday at 313pm. We can do better than this!
That being said, I’ve got nothing to add other than Charles Lee is my favorite though I admittedly know very little about him.
Anyone got anything?

if anyone had anything, we'd be talking about it.

Understood, just a microcosm of the relative lack of interest in and support for the Pelicans I guess.
I’ll speculate. If it were Vaughn we’d have had a hire. So it’s got to be Lee. Thoughts?
I know, new take.
