Whatever I do, the only way I'm entertaining an NYK deal is if Randle is NOT in the deal. Don't want that contract, rebuilding or not.

They can do Fournier, Reddish, and Quickley for Mitchell. Not that the Fournier deal is great by any stretch.

I don't even know how good this lineup is...

Mitchell Robinson
Julius Randle
RJ Barrett
Donovan Mitchell
Jalen Brunson

Derrick Rose
Obi Toppin

I bet Ainge takes on Fournier if it means that the Knicks send more picks than a deal without him involved.

At this point, he is looking for future assets and to tank this season.

I don't think their plan is to win a championship this year.
If they can get Mitchell this year, and unload Fournier in the process, they will set themselves up very nicely to sign a max contract guy next offseason to join Mitchell/Brunson

How do they afford that with Brunson, Mitchell, Randle, and Robinson? And no picks to trade to get off of Randle?

We should be all on board for a Mitchell trade to NYC. Would make it much harder for Zion to force his way there when they are paying him and RJ max contracts.

Wouldn’t it force the Knicks to deal Mitchell in order to get Zion?

Zion is definitely under a 5 year designated rookie extension. Pretty sure Mitchell is also on one. No team can trade for two such players.

My concern of Zion going to NYK is practically zero now...

And that starting 5 for NYK would be terrible defensively. Could be fun offensively though.

I believe so.

I think it can get you into the playoffs, but the entirety of that squad's long-term upside is dependent on RJ Barrett taking a Jayson Tatum/Branon Ingram like leap.

Max 5 seed, possibly fighting to avoid the play in, maybe getting the 7th or so seed, 1 and done in the playoffs IMO.

I think Donovan Mitchell had a clearly better squad in Utah for years, and never could get past the 2nd round.

maybe that's why they make sure Randle is outgoing this year more so than Fournier, as it will be a lot easier to dump Fournier next year as an expiring.
But the bigger problem is Barret having a $32M cap hold.
I'm sure the salary cap will be almost $130M next year.
Mitchell/Brunson/Robinson make $72M next year.
Outside of Obi Toppin making $6M next year, they really have nothing else other than near minimums and team options on the roster.
So what they do with Randle $25M, Fournier $19M and Barrett $32M will determine what they have to work with next offseason.

Even if they sent out Randle/Barrett for Mitchell, and kept Fournier, they could easily have $30M in cap space to make a nice signing next year, and that's with Fournier on the team. If they can keep a pick somewhere so they can unload Fournier, then they'll have plenty of cap space to sign whoever is dumb enough to go to the Knicks, like Kyrie Irving.

Let’s assume Mitchell gets dealt for Toppin, Quickley, Fournier, and 5 picks

Potential Knicks 2023-2024 cap commitments (estimates per spotrac)

Barrett- 25-32 mil (my guess)
Brunson- 25 mil
Robinson- 14 mil
Randle- 26 mil
Hartenstein- 8 mil
Mitchell- 33 mil (IF he doesn’t make all-nba)
Grimes- 2 mil (option they’d certainly pick up)
McBride- 2 mil (another option)

That’s 8 guys taking up 138 million. The projected 2023-2024 salary cap is 133 million and the luxury tax threshold is 160 million.

Even if they dump Randle, they’ll likely have to take back some salary to make it work. Idk. Seems unlikely they’ll have max cap space next offseason.

then it doesn't work. Can't work f Barrett stays on the team b/c his cap hold is $32M, and definitely can't if Barrett and Randle stay.

Lets assume he gets dealt for Barrett, Toppin, Randle and 4 picks.
2024 salaries:
Mitchell $33M
Brunson $26M
Fournier $19M
Robinson $16M
Hartenstein $8M
Quickly $4M
6 roster spots at $1.8M - $11M

That's $117M, and i'm sure they could dump an expiring Fournier, meaning they'd easily get to $35M in cap space, and even more if they want to send Hartenstein out too.

If the Knicks give up Barrett, Toppin and Randle plus 4 picks someone should lose their job lol

Unless it is Dolan, it won’t fix anything.

They gave up the entire farm for Melo back in the day because Dolan leaned on the GM to give Denver whatever they wanted instead of negotiating from strength.

Indiana is the last team to figure out that Centers are not what you build your team around anymore.
