Also, I'm not sure Phoenix ever wanted KD at the price he would cost anyway. If they have to give up Bridges, how do you build a defense? He's as critical to their defense as Herb is to ours.

I doubt that. The majority of the deal they were proposing would've been Ayton and picks, both we know they don't value. So is Bridges really going to be the only holdup from getting KD? I don't see it.

Midnight what time zone?

They have about 8.5 hours if it is EST and about 10.5-11.5 if it is Arizona time (Arizona doesn’t do Daylight Savings Time IIRC).

Signing it this late in the day is probably an attempt to either make Phoenix frantically take whatever they offer or hope they don’t match because Sarver is a cheap bastard.

You're looking at it from a player value stand point. People think it's as simple as "have the 3 best stars" but it really isn't or the Lakers would have given up all of the picks to get Kyrie already.

Woj says Suns not terribly interested in a sign and trade but are expected to match.

Per Woj: So far, Suns haven't shown an interest in negotiating a sign-and-trade on Ayton with the Pacers, but the expectation remains that Phoenix will match the record-$133M offer sheet once it's signed, sources tell ESPN. Suns could trade Ayton as soon as Jan. 15 once sheet is matched.

KD really about to stay with the Nets huh

That’s going to be a fun locker room after the way last season ended.

Very weird move by the Suns all around. Why not do a Sign and Trade?

They don’t even want Ayton but are going to match and not even try a trade first. Strange.

My guess is that they wanted Ayton but wanted to lowball him because Sarver is a cheap bastard.

We did the same thing with Eric Gordon but Gordon was also coming off a season ending injury and had been the centerpiece of the CP3 trade. No fricking way we were letting him walk without compensation.

I wonder if Indiana adds a poison pill into the contract that would make Phoenix hesitant to match like a no trade clause.

Poison pill? Possibly.

Can’t be a No Trade clause though. NBA rules on getting one of those mean you have to be a veteran with around 10 years experience to get one and have spent the last 4-6 years with your current team.

Ayton’s only on his 5th season in the league so he doesn’t qualify for one.

Yea I thought the plan all along was to match a 4 yr deal instead of giving 5 yr $173

THIS is a strange flex, for sure. They are clueless, apparently.

The only thing that I can think would be that they want to possibly trade him down the line and they feel like they can get more out of a future trade than what the Pacers have been offering.

The way they handled this is going to wreck that locker room IMHO.

We already sat through a version of it with Eric Gordon.

The Pacer's owner really doesn't like signing players to offer sheets, this came out with the Brogdon deal a few years back, he sees it as harmful to other owners and that they are part of a fraternity or whatever. So, I wonder if he gave the green light to his front office to put in all of the fun stuff that makes things harder for the Suns (50% payment before the season starts, 4th year player option, 15% trade kicker, etc...).

The Pacers are waiving guard Duane Washington and waiving and stretching the three players who arrived in the Boston trade for Malcolm Brogdon: Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and Nik Stauskas, sources tell ESPN. That'll create the cap space to sign Ayton to the max offer sheet.

They probably wouldn’t have done this with the Bucks because people liked Herb Kohl, who I believe still owned the team at the time.

Sarver? He’s a dickhead that I don’t believe is well liked among other owners.

Cap implications of those moves-

Washington was non-guaranteed for $1.5m

Fitts was getting paid $1.7m for one season, 1.65m guaranteed. A stretch takes this down to about $550k per season for three seasons.

Stauskas and Morgan were both under similar contracts.

This clears roughly $8m in total cap space with a long term cost of about $1.6m or so for three seasons.
