quote:I disagree with using PER for role players. Role players, by definition, are playing within a defined role, and that affects PER. Especially when talking about defensive players.
By PER: FYI I'll be glad to look at any other metrics you want to look at: HIll - 10.5 Moore - 10.8 QPon - 9.9 A Year For the Ages: 35.0 Runaway MVP Candidate: 30.0 Strong MVP Candidate: 27.5 Weak MVP Candidate: 25.0 Bona fide All-Star: 22.5 Borderline All-Star: 20.0 2nd Pineapple: 18.0 3rd Banana: 16.5 Pretty good player: 15.0 In the rotation: 13.0 Scrounging for minutes: 11.0 Definitely renting: 9.0 The Next Stop: DLeague 5.0 At best these guys are "scrounging for minutes" if you think that's league average no you're wrong. League average would be more like "in the rotation" level guys.
For example... Trevor Ariza his first year in Houston had a PER of 12.7. You look at that and think he sucks.
But we all know how vital he was to that team that went to the WCF.

Not only that, but the structure of the NBA makes it very easy to be stuck in mediocrity. We might be good enough to get into the playoffs, but then it becomes frustratingly difficult to take that next step. The draft almost becomes a poison because teams have to take a player that will very likely be a fringe talent taking up a roster spot.
Teams are forced to look at FA to find those missing pieces. When we had CP3, Chandler, and West we had a very good core. We couldn't ever seem to get add pieces to push our team to the next level. We were good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to win a championship.
I could see this team following a similar path. Maybe good enough to get to the playoffs, but likely stuck somewhere in the middle. It is like being in the badlands.
It is almost better to be a underachieving team with talent, so that you have a chance at a lottery pick, than to have a good team playing at your talent level because it seems to be extremely difficult to move from a good team to a great in the NBA.

Good post. No one has any illusions that this team will be the freaking Warriors.
This is about getting better fits, depth, efficiency, defense, and role players. They have AD and Jrue (obviously to a lesser extent), they need players that will play specific roles around them and play within a system.
This is a good step. Its not the last step. They aren't a championship contender.
But it is a much better roster.

I think you are forgetting that this is a "what have you done for me lately league"

I hope you're not talking about Eric Gordon. Otherwise prepare to be disappointed

I use PER To explain in numbers what I see with my eyes. If the PER doesn't agree with what my eyes tell me I won't even reference PER. From watching those guys play a good bit their PER accurately reflects their value IMO.

Jones for the minimum or Ryan Anderson for $20m
These dudes critiquing Jones talmbout a player makin the minimum
WGAF if he's terrible

Super-sub offense creator role.

They just gave out a ton of money to two dudes we couldn't wait to get rid of

I really look forward to the middle of the season after about 41 games of Eric Gordon in a "creator" roll. Really look forward to that spin.

I use PER when it makes Houston players seem good. When it doesn't, I revert to my arbitrary eye test. I do the exact opposite for Pelicans players. I'm not trolling, though. I just disagree with y'all sometimes, ergo anytime anything positive is said about the Pelicans.

Can you predict Gordon and andersons stats for me? Don't just say "a little better than last year". Go down the line and give some numbers on each

now that they are part of the BEST and who have the most Win in NBA history.
Ryan Anderson - come back player of the year, 25 pts per game...name 2nd team all defense
Eric Gordon - 6th man of the year, wins the 3 points contest at the all-star game

Wait until you see him score 10-12 points in the first quarter of every game, only to see him score 2-4 points the rest of the game......every game.
and wait until you see him drive to the goal and get the shite fouled out of him but have no foul called every time. I don't know what the hell EG did to NBA refs, but they don't give him anything.

It all depends on Jones health with the leg. Had some freak injury that may still cost him his career if not healthy. He played well before the injury, even had a 40+ pointer game.
If AD wanted him you give it a shot. I do t see AD being happy at all if they had signed Robinson. TRob ran his chops against AD in college. When the draft came up and before with the NPOY award, TRob said he was not impressed with AD. Said he deserved the awards, and some real tension at the combine. That's been 4 years ago, but these guys remember a slight.

Boom did have to (or it was recommended) take a vacation from the PT board awhile back. Maybe it's time for another one.
