He's playing on essentially a freebie 1 year to prove his value. He plays well again, he's getting 20mil annually at 27, right in his prime.

20 seems pretty excessive since he doesn't even start over Brook Lopez. But yeah he'd be dumb to not try and get a multi year contract and guarantee that generational wealth

Portis is probably worth about what Graham got.
I don't believe he's a 20 mil guy

Lauri is a new age big that can shoot. Even if 17 is an overpay, he will always have value b/c he’s a shooter.
if hes available hes worth a first.
the gamble is whether hes healthy.

No, he's not. Lauri is still a poor defender. He's not average, he's poor. He's a very good offensive player who scores a lot of points and then gives them back on the defensive end.
We need shooting and I'd like for him to be on the team, and he's young enough that I could believe that he will still improve as a defender, but he's absolutely not worth giving up a 1st for.

I do think he is worth more than what Portis got.
uhhh....ya think? how is what Portis went back to Mil for relevant in the slightest?
The NBA is proving that its not a comparable and perfect free market.
Its like the inverse of rent. You wouldnt show up in NYC and say "2500/month in Baton Rouge would get me a whole house. this is a bad deal."

I 100% do not believe that either, but IIRC next year there's more teams with money to spend.
He comes out putting up 15/8/2, shooting 50/40/75 and plays that level of defense he showed during the playoffs and I feel there's gonna be a sucker somewhere.

Yeah this off-season is definitely a bet on yourself off-season. A lot of money will be thrown around next off-season

Y’all remember when he broke Niko’s jaw a few years back?

Based on what?
Lauri is a one way utility player while Portis is a legit 2 way stretch 4/5.
I would take Portis over Lauri in a heartbeat.

Yeah baw and the one that lost the fight was our 3rd best player and led us to the 2nd rd of the playoffs.
Imagine having the guy who actually won the fight…
Love you Niko, come back…

If you can't get a Portis type I wish this team would be more forward thinking and look to the Jeff Green's, Rudy Gay's, Daniel Theis, Robert Covington's, Batum, and PJ Tucker types to be your situational 4 or 5 that can still play at SF as well. Those type of players are much more useful to me.
That is the archetype I would be looking toward, not Lauri Markkanen. A one way utility shooter that cant guard anyone. I don't know why Griff always feels like he is two seasons behind on big men trends. Goes back to his infatuation with Mozgov.
Vet forwards with size and savvy that can hit jumpers, grab boards, and play center or PF for 10-20 minutes a game depending on matchups. Spot play at SF still.
Much more valuable and synergistic for a roster that already has three more traditional sized bigs.

It sounds to me like the Bulls are trying to force Markennan to return on the QO and get him cheap for another year.

Either way, each team that has inquired about Markkanen would have to now add him via sign-and-trade, as cap space has dwindled across the league. Dallas, New Orleans, Boston, and Minnesota have all shown interest in signing Markkanen to deals worth around $15 million in average annual value, sources said, but the Bulls are seeking a first-round pick in exchange for helping facilitate the transaction. Additionally, Chicago brass are requiring Markkanen's new team to find a third trade partner to take on the outgoing salary needed to create space for Markkanen's contract.
For a third team to take on unwanted salary, this hypothetical front office would also ask for draft-pick compensation. So any team that wants to add Markkanen now would have to send a first-round pick to Chicago and likely another first or two second-rounders elsewhere. It's a clear roadblock the Bulls seem to have intentionally created.
"Chicago is playing this masterfully from no other perspective than a contract management standpoint," said one team capologist. "It won't do any favors relationship-wise, but they're bleeding his market based on their tax situation, and nobody else can offer him any kind of money without them."

That's exactly what they are doing. That's going to hurt relationships with agents and player(s), but its pretty damn smart in the short term.
I think if this was an American born player that had a market and was had a following they wouldn't do it. I think they believe they can get away with it with a Euro.

So Lauri's options are looking like sign a 3 year deal below his perceived value, or return on the QO?
Posted on 8/10/21 at 8:49 am to Corporal Beavis
I don't think the Bulls are offering him a deal at all.
His options are basically to play under the QO or hope a team is willing to do a S&T for him giving up assets, which no one will.

Should've clarified on the first part that 3 year deal would be with another team. I guess he could even sign a 1 year deal worth 15 mil or at the MLE and see if the Bulls match. If he wants out so bad that seems like his only hope.
Posted on 8/10/21 at 8:56 am to Corporal Beavis
The problem is virtually no teams have space left to outright sign him into space on a 15 million a year deal, which is why the Bulls are doing this.
The Bulls would just match any lowball deal.
So any team that wants him pretty much has to do a S&T, and the Bulls are hardballing everyone.
Its a really shrewd move by the Bulls...but one that could cause issues for them later on down the road.
