He claims his reasoning was that he heard the opposing coach tell them to miss it on purpose so the time would run out getting the rebound, so Garlon decided they would have a better chance at converting a 4 point play with .4 seconds left, than a 2 point play with 0 seconds left. I shite you not

So this guy is not only a genius but the brother of one of the more freakishly athletic guys to play in the NBA, a 6'-7" wing with long wingspan described as the 'utility knife' of the summer league team, and shot 45% from 3 last year in Europe.

He's officially my Onome Ojo of the 2018 Pelicans offseason.

Grizzlies traded Jarell Martin to Orlando for Dakari Johnson.

Didn't realize the Grizz were in the tax. They did that simply for tax purposes, and they are still about a $1M into the tax right now.

Could have easily used our exception on Martin, and they still have guys on deals in the 1.5M range that could get them under the tax. I'd gladly take Dillon Brooks, but i doubt they part with him.

Teams over the tax are giving away their scrubs now. They know that if it comes down to it, they an move better players in February to escape the tax. No need to do it now.

So, sure, the Wiz will give us Jodie Meeks now, but they aren't gonna give away Satoransky or Oubre. Makes no sense.

Dell is not going to take a guy just to take a guy. He basically views us as having three open roster spots right now, and loves that flexibility. When the right guy is available, he can go get him without having to make any other moves. I know he has talked a bit with the Clippers. Don't know who he'd want, but he's at least partially interested in one of those guys over there, and they need to shed two guaranteed contracts

I wouldn't expect those guys. I know the Clippers want someone to take Juwan Evans. Could see Dell taking him into their smaller exemption for cash and/or a 2nd round pick. Then, cutting him. Or maybe you take him if you also get Tyrone Wallace in the deal

Saw Sam Dekker's name on the roster and it peaked my interest a little. Then saw that he shot 16% from 3 last year with the Clippers and moved on.

my point was more that the QPOn trade exception expires on 9/1 and it's for $3.8M
Once that goes away, we have the Dante exception for $2.3M and then two more for $1.4M all expiring in Feb.

If there's a guy out there making more than $2.3M then you're only chance to get him with the exception is now. Hell even if you just take on a contract from someone like Memphis just to get their 2nd round pick, that would be a nice get.

And yes i understand it won't be hard to trade away someone like Liggins or Diallo for that player making over $2.3M later in the season. Just looking for a way to get something from that QPON exception, even if it's a dumpable player and a 2nd.

Right, but you don't just use it because you have it. You view it as a possible resource, but I wouldn't just use it to take a bad player to get a 2nd. I'd prefer to get a guy who might play this year over the 2nd.

But... if I don't see anybody out there who will play, I might do it for the 2nd AND an expiring I could use at the deadline.

But when Dell gets a guy after camp closes like he did with Ish or he gets Ajinca, Babbitt, Montiejunas, etc in season. You can see why he values open roster spots.

Yes. But you have whole 5 weeks to use this exception.
You can sit back and wait.

There are not many teams able to get some salary without anything back/sending much less.

Also unsigned FA will soon realize that they can only get minimum. And some teams would prefer them to their actual players.

so right now we have 12 spots for sure, not including Blueit and Carr, or Liggin and Okafor.
Carr isn't making the team, and Blueitt doesn't count towards the 15. Okafor and Liggins aren't guaranteed yet. I'd keep Okafor and his contract for trade purposes, but we have zero use for Liggins on the court or in trades. We can very easily keep another open roster spot if we need to.

all i'm saying is if you can't find a good player to get with it, then at least try to get another expiring and a 2nd round pick out of it.

I saw it mentioned on Twitter that the Grizzlies are right up against the tax, and that Andrew Harrison only has 200k guaranteed right now. Do you think they'd move him to stay below the tax, or do you think they'll just try to get off of one of their other (worse) players during the season?

No clue what the Grizz will do, but I would rank 10-15 guys out there ahead of Harrison.

Again, I get the feeling that some will have that the Pels would be "wasting" the exception if they didn't use it. But if you can get a better player with a minimum than you can with the exception, you use the minimum

The team is who they are at this point. I seriously doubt they are looking out there for some minimum contract guy to be some big contributor to the team right now. We are trying to set ourselves up for bigger moves. Would you rather Andrew Harrison and a 2nd, or Devin Harris? I know your answer, but i'd rather the pick and player. Devin Harris is no more of a trade asset than Harrison, and neither will make a single difference in our wins and losses this year if they join the team.

Ian Clark was just a minimum guy. And he was finishing playoff games last year. Ish Smith signed like two days before the opener and started games/kept them afloat for a while. Terrance Jones was signed to a minimum deal in late July and put up big numbers in stretches. All those guys I mentioned that Dell got in season, and I even forgot Okafor.

You can't simultaneously say that Dell's best attribute is how he works the edges, and then when he has three roster spots to work the edges say, Who cares, it won't matter - just use it to pick up a 2nd rounder"

I will bet a large amount of money that a guy he picks up between now and before the season starts will be a significant contributor, i.e. a 10th man who gets 6th/7th man minutes when injuries inevitably occur. There is still one more spot in the rotation that needs to be filled.

He seems to find gems at guard and pf/c

But goddamn he's so bad at finding a viable wing haha.

Why would the Grizz give you a 2nd to take Harrison? If they're that worried about future tax implications they'd cut him before using a 2nd to dump him. You don't pay the tax until all of your salaries are added up at the end of the year so the have plenty of time to make other moves and get under it.

Speaking of TPE’s, Portland has one that expires today for $12m. Solo fits!! If only they’d take him into that and then we could take Harkless back. A guy can dream.
