From Bobby Marks himself
quote:

Jones has early bird rights. Max contract is 4/$53.3M New Orleans skirting right at the luxury tax before free agency opens.

So average of 13.325 million a year is the max we can pay him.

Starting salary around 12 million and 1 million raises every year would be roughly the amount.

The pels wouldn't have declined this without a deal lined up. Just sit back and wait for this to be announced the second free agency opens

This is why JV,Kira,Temple, Hayes, and Hernangomez will all be gone this offseason. JV, Kira, and Temple is the only route to upgrade the team.

This deal limits what we can do this offseason but it will pay dividends in the future. If you can lock up Trey for 30m/yr you're looking at paying a combined 43m/yr for both herb and trey. Thats good business

If we picked it up, he would have been eligible for 4/$71m next offseason. So we have less flexibility this offseason but can have major savings on the Herb extension by doing so.

Yea but if you count this years 1.8, wouldn’t it really be a 5 year $73 deal? So like 14.5 a year instead of 12.5 for the next 4. We’d have him one year longer for not that much more per year on average…..

Plus we can definitely stay under the tax this year and make a bigger move.

True but you'd also have to factor the savings in year 5, or whatever Herbs salary would be if we extended him again down the road.

True again but how we have that same additional flexibility in year 5.

I gotcha, I was just unsure if I had missed some nuance or detail that made the Reaves and Herb free agency max money situations different.

If his shooting improves, it will likely cost us more in year 5 b/c he will be UFA a year sooner. Plus the cap will only go up. So we’d actually be losing flexibility later on if we plan on resigning him again.

More I think about, seems like a stupid move unless they just trying to show good will to Herb making him a millionaire…..

There are pros and cons to both options.

Sounds like a good deal for both sides. Now...what's next?

I guess I’m the only person that would be shopping Herb like crazy.

I would assume so. Especially if we get him at like 4/52. Thats one of the best contracts in the league. Dumb idea to shop him.

You might well turn out to be right...but I think the Pels have decided they want Herb for, at least, the next 4 years. After that...who knows?...we'll have to get together & figure it out again, 4 years from now.

Herb is kind of like JV in that there aren't really any trades to upgrade him that aren't going to be an overpay. If you use him to fill another position, it seems like the Pels would be the ones losing value.

Dump Kira to San Antonio, trade JV for Gafford, and cut temple. That gives you a starting center and some more space to fill out the rest of the roster. Gafford is also locked up cheap for 3 years at 12,13, and 14

For updated tax space with these moves

If/when we release Temple we will be 12.4 million below the tax (after signing Hawkins)

If we are able to trade Kira without taking much back or anything back then we could be 18.3 million below the tax (per Sotrac)

Slightly less as there are cap holds for the empty roster spots for less than 12 players under contract. However, it is pretty close to that.

That’s accounting for 2 incomplete roster spots.

Spotrac has a manage roster option that you can shuffle things around and see the different consequences

Meh.

We are too close to the tax and you have to start picking and choosing who you pay. Trey and Dyson I think will be both turn out to be better players, and it forces Willie to start Trey which they absolutely need to do.

I think Herb has reached his peak. He’s a great defender but gives you nothing else.

I don’t think he’s going to finish out a 4 year contract with us.
