How much do you think he can get? You think he's worth more than that?

Some comps of guys in Herb's general vicinity as a player who were extended while on their rookie deal over the past 3 years. Excluding guys making $30 million a year or more for obvious reasons.

De'Andre Hunter: 4 years, 90 million
Keldon Johnson: 4 years, 74 million
Derrick White: 4 years, 70 million
Kevin Porter Jr. 4 years, 82 million
Mikal Bridges: 4 years, 90 million
Brandon Clarke: 4 years, 52 million
Wendell Carter Jr: 4 years, 50 million
Kevin Huerter: 4 years, 65 million
Robert Williams: 4 years, 48 million
Landry Shamet: 4 years, 42 million
OG Anunoby: 4 years, 72 million
Jonathan Isaac: 4 years, 70 million
Markelle Fultz:3 years, 50 million
Luke Kennard: 4 years, 56 million
Kyle Kuzma: 3 years, 39 million

I'm guessing a fair number here for Herb is around 4 years and $70 million. That's going market rate for good young player who clearly isn't a max guy.

The New Orleans Pelicans are declining forward Herb Jones’ $1.8 million team option for the 2023-24 season, which clears way for Jones to be a restricted free agent and for the sides to work toward a long-term extension, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Well, predict Herb next contract.

They have to be close if they’re declining his option, or they will let the market dictate what he gets.

Major steal if that’s the ballpark number

This is interesting. Jones would have been an RFA next offseason too. But Pels are getting a jump on things. Look for them to give Jones the max they can, which is about $51M over four seasons.

Yeah, Keith Smith with Spotrac posted this, 12.6 million a year or so is the max he can earn even from another team I believe.

That's the max we can give him.

If we picked it up, he would have been eligible for 4/$71m next offseason.

So we have less flexibility this offseason but can have major savings on the Herb extension by doing so.

Then declining the option was a great move.

He takes up more cash this season but we also lock him up for an additional three seasons.

The only risk w this is a team like Houston, w a lot of cap space could say frick it, offer 4yr 75 mil (up to 100 mill) and poison pill the front end. On a $100 4 year deal, a team can make that first year count against the cap $38M if they truly want to.

Similar situation to Reaves and Lakers. They can only offer 4yr 50 mil, but they can match another team’s offer above $50M.

Since we have to create space under the tax anyway, i would like to see them make the new contract a declining contract or at worst a flat deal to increase cap flexibility in future years.

The Pelicans have not picked up the team option on Willy Hernangomez ($2.6m) and did not extend the qualifying offer to Jaxson Hayes, sources tell ESPN. It's still possible Hayes and the Pelicans come to an agreement later but they did not extend the $7.7m qualifying offer.

Correction on the Herb Jones situation: Sources confirm the Pelicans have declined the $1.8 million team option on Jones making him an unrestricted free agent. The team is hopeful they can lock him in to a longer deal once free agency begins.

So Herb is a UFA not a RFA.

Them going this route tells me they have a contract agreed to already, just have to wait for free agency

FYI, Lopez deleted the tweet about Herb being unrestricted and updated to restricted.

I about lost it there.
