Wait, what?

This is the path to giving Herb a raise this year so he's cheaper in future years than if you waited until next year to do this.

Probably would rather it start in 2024 when we have Jonas as an expired contract. Having it start this season would push us into the tax unless we shed about 14 million or so.

Do it now and get a discount. Player gets his money now and the team gets a discount.

For updated tax space with these moves

If/when we release Temple we will be 12.4 million below the tax (after signing Hawkins)

If we are able to trade Kira without taking much back or anything back then we could be 18.3 million below the tax (per Sotrac)

We should all be aware there is a decent sized risk in this move since there are teams with a ton of space looming in the background

His ceiling is tied to his 33.6% from 3. The new CBA is going to prevent teams from giving anything north of 15 per. Seeing how teams are really panicking about their future cap, the Pelicans have pretty good leverage for a slight low ball.

Of course. The worry is that even if herb and griff have already agreed if some team like the spurs comes in and throws the bank at him, does herb stand on his previous agreement or see dollar signs?

RFA. Even if the Spurs sign him to a sheet, we get to match.

They can't even get the man to take a vacation, he's not going to take a meeting from another team.

Sure but...

There exists a hilarious (for me but not for the the team) scenario where Detroit, San Antonio, Houston etc throws a massive bag at Herb and creates the poison pill.

2023-24: $11.37M
2024-25: $11.94M
2025-26: $27.72M
2026-27: $28.97M

Total: four years, $80,000,000

The Pelicans and Herb's agent probably already agreed on a number.

I still can't believe someone on here thought that they wouldn't pick up naji's option.

Yep

And if he pulls a Boozer, he'll become the most hated Pel immediately... can't possibly see that happening.

The most anyone can offer is 4 years/ $50 million and I'm certain that's what we're gonna offer ourselves. So no, there's not any risk to any team outbidding us this off-season.

Incorrect

4/50 is the most we can offer. 4/80 is the most other teams can offer.

ETA: not sure $80mil is even the max, it could be much higher, like Austin Reaves, similar situation.

I’ve got a question

Why is Austin Reaves potential max from another team, 4 yr 100 mil?

And Herb’s is only 4yr 80 mil?

Both the Lakers and Pels are capped at offering 4yr 50 mil on their end, unless there is a matching scenario.

Pretty much the exact same situation from my vantage point?

I just edited my post above for this very thing.
