I hear everything you are saying bunch. If trading Herb got us the unicorn center, I would be all for it.

As started above, I think when it comes down to it, either Cj or Trey will have to go. And the only way it’s not CJ is if Herb takes off and proves a better option than Trey. A tall task I realize.

CJ will be moved for even larger salary imo so that won’t be totally relevant.

Trey is not going anywhere, neither is CJ.

The most likely to be gone from the guard rotation imo is Jose. There’s no way we will be able to re-sign him unless we can get him for a 4/16 or something

We won’t be paying max or near max deals to Zion, Bi, Cj(replacement), and Trey.

Correct, we have 2 more years of those 4.

After that or some time during, 1 of those 4 simply cannot remain on the team.

The obvious answer is CJ.

The question is --- can we start grooming a guard (Dyson is the best answer)

By the time we will need to extend Trey the tax line should be right around 200 million.

CJ in that season makes 30 million
Zion 39 million
BI should be around 39 million
Trey will come in around 22 (estimate a 5/125 deal)
Herb around 15
Hawkins around 6 million

Thats ~152 million tied up, leaving ~ 48 million to fill out the other 8 spots, or 6 million between each spot.

We will be fine that year, and the following season CJ is an expired contract that will probably re-sign with us in the 15-20 range giving us even more flexibility.

He’s been drastically better than Dyson offensively to this point. He’s older than Dyson to be sure, but still. No way you watch Herb and don’t see the slashing, decision making, finishing, etc. And while he’s so far hovered at 33.5% from three, I believe he can and will be league average there. I personally think Herb can start for a championship team. For sure the rest of the team has to be good, but he’s a smart and winning player IMO.

Comparing a rookie that had one year of ball to someone with a few years under their belt in the league and played 4 years in college is laughable. Dyson is not far off defensively already and will be better by the time he is Herbs age.

He’s not a 2 way player at all.

I never claimed he was, dipshit. You said you wanted to replace him with a better offensive player with good defense. Those players aren’t just available especially for 4/52ish. Completely unrealistic to think that way.

Based off your comment it was easy to infer that. Maybe be a little more clear when you're trying to trash other posters

Where in my comment did I say “Herb jones is an elite 2 way player”

You coulda just scrolled up and seen that Funny Bunch thinks there’s a waiting list of great 2 way players available for less than 15 million per year.

at the worst interpretation of that post, you're acting like Herb is gonna get there during that 4/52. When I can promise you he won't. His shot needs to be completely rebuilt. It's a line drive and it's why he'll more likely be a league average shooter at best instead of an elite two way guy.

Is he a great cutter? Yes
Does he have any off the dribble shot? No
Is he an elite rim runner? No
Does he have a back to the basket game when smaller dudes are on him? No

Considering all the elite scorers barely perform on defense its not a stretch to assume an above average scorer and a great defender could be considered an “elite” 2 way player. There are hardly any in the league right now. This is who Fun Bunch thinks we can just up and replace Herb Jones with.

Will Herb ever be above league average offensively? Hell no. Are the odds higher he will develop into a better 2 way player than anyone in the league readily available we could trade him for? Yep.

Your scenario is so out of whack.

People forget that Herb Jones offensively outdueled Nikola Jokic for an entire quarter one time and led the Pels to a victory while we were missing key players.

Herb honestly has a decent offensive bag. He’s just not a pure shooter. But he can cut, score on fast breaks, dribble, hit legit euro step layups, pass, etc. And he does it with a lot more intensity and confidence than someone like Dyson does at this point. He’s also more athletic than Dyson.

Herb has much more in his offensive arsenal than he is given credit for. But when he’s simply playing off ball of Ingram, CJ and Zion, it tends to marginalize his touches and Rhythm and makes him have to rely on his biggest weakness (outside shooting).

I’d pay Herb 4yr 60 Mil all day tbh. I think there is an entirely different level that he can get to, if necessary. Hopefully he won’t have to, bc that will mean Zion and Ingram are healthy and running the offense 90% of the time.
