He better figure something out because playing at 300 isn't going to cut it. Zion needs to play at 250, period end of decussion.

Zion is not fat. He is very dense and muscular. He is legitimately under 15% body fat at 270ish. He does not have the fat to lose. He has to drop muscle. We are talking about body recomposition. It is very difficult and runs counter to anything any of us try to do. We all want to gain muscle. He needs to do this while trying to retain as much power and explosion possible. It's actually a fascinating undertaking and I'd love to watch his journey to see if/how he can accomplish it..

You need to analyze his physique and how his weight is distributed. He is very unique and stockily built. He does not have a gut or side rolls. He's not carrying 20+% BF. If he's sub 15% at 280, that's less than 15lbs of fat to get him under 10% BF. That's not getting him where he needs to be.

Most basketball players are not like him and easily are under 10%, some maybe around 6-7 (Ingram, Durant). I don't believe Zion could go anywhere near that low. It would too restrictive for him. He needs to be in that 12-15% range. His only alternative is to shed muscle.

What do you think the team tells him?

Like I’m curious if they’ve ever had this conversation with him about slimming down even more.

Everything that makes him great -- start/stop, slow/fast, jump/re-jump, run one way finisj another, etc -- would put any athlete at increased risk of injury

I think Ja gets injured alot from the same explosive movement type of play, but he's 170lbs so I imagine it takes less of a toll

Just because he doesn’t have a gut or love handles does not mean he isn’t holding extra weight.

Leonard fournette never looks fat either but he is a noticeably better player at 225 than he is at 245.

He could lose some strength & still be the baddest dude on the court, much like Fournette & the myriad of other athletes who have better conditioned their body by dropping weight.

I'm not debating that at all. He needs to lose weight. I just believe it is muscle.

I don't know if remember David Boston. He was a WR awhile back. Freak athlete that got roided up and put on 30+lbs of muscle one off season. He was trying to play at 260 and his body just broke down.

Another example is Laron Landry. Guys that shortened careers from being too muscular and heavy. It's hard to let muscle go and some guys get addicted to it.

He’s not fat per se, but he’s still carrying extra weight on his frame. Let’s say he’s playing at 280 pounds @ 15% body fat giving him a LBM of about 235 pounds. That’s not a fat guy but it’s a heavy guy, especially for pro basketball.

If he took his BF% to 10 even—not a low number for a run and jump athlete—he’s playing @ 265 pounds, much closer to big guys like LeBron and Barkley who had long, relatively injury-free careers. If he got to 8% body fat—pretty damn lean, but not undoable—now he’s under 260.

I really think 8-10% body fat @ around 260 pounds should be the playing weight goal. I think he was around that in college.

Brother there is no universe in which he is under 15%. He's probably in the 25% range. At 15% he'd have visible abs.

If he actually followed a strict training and diet regimen he could get down to a rock solid 250 within four months, he just won't fricking do it. But you're also right that in doing so he'd lose power, so it would negatively impact his game when he's actually on the court.

He has to be, per his contract. His weight plus BF% have to be under 295. If he's 280, it has be be under 15%. For him to be 25%, he'd have to be under 270. Which one is more likely?

Not everybody shows under 15%. It really depends on body type and where you carry your fat. Lots of people don't present until well under 10%.

30 pounds in 4 months? There is no way. If he started now, he might be close by the start of next season. Still a lot to lose..

Ehhh, not really

The way I understand it, if he doesn't hit those marks the guaranteed portions of his contract decrease.

So the only way it means anything is if we cut him, so it's all irrelevant right now and means absolutely nothing.

We don't know where his weight is right now.

30 lbs may not be enough.

there's one thing we do know. Anytime he's away from playing basketball games for a prolonged period of time he comes back seriously out of shape, and takes about a month to get into basketball shape once he starts playing games.

He was in great condition at the beginning of the year. Still too heavy, but he wasn't out of shape..
