As far as the age debate, it's definitely the 72 y/o as per the article in the OP:
quote:
Bhathal, 72, and Larry Benson, 66, each once owned franchises in the now defunct World League of American Football, a spring league venture initiated and funded by the NFL in 1990. Bhathal owned the franchise in Orlando, Fla., while Benson owned the team in San Antonio, his home base.

Nobody knows how much cash on hand he has and even if he has enough #370M+ is a lot of money to buy this franchise. I am sure he wants to own the Hornets but at the same time I am sure there is a number he just won't go past. No deal is done just yet so there is still hope and I am holding out for it even with the reports.

This has always been the case. He could have bought the team outright a year and a half ago, but he will not pay more than he thinks it's worth. He never wanted to be more than a 51% owner, and he was only willing to put up a certain amount of his money.
This thing isn't over yet. The problem is, as rich as Couest and other investors may be, there are egocentric multi-gazillionaires on the East and West coasts that want to own a team.
As far as Harvey's site is concerned . . . there is so much I want to say but will refrain.

Larry Benson? I didn't even know of his existence.
Tom has been able to keep Larry under wraps for years. But keep your eyes focused on Moe and Curly. They're the real players.
ETA: I will say that since the NBA got control of the team, it's been very tough to get info that meaningful. No matter what, I still maintain that New Orleans has the team for ten years at a minimum. If it can't generate a fanbase in that amount of time, then I will understand if the franchise relocates.

Larry Benson being a part of this needs more focus.
He's a native even if he's lived in Tx a long time. His brother might be the most significant New Orleanian alive and has more pull in this state than almost anyone.

wwl said sources told them tom benson pulled out because he wasn't able to get nfl approval last week to purchase the hornets. the nba wanted to announce during all star break and hurdles with nfl owner approval caused him to pull out.

"OK...just had another conversation...and I STILL believe it will be Chouest in the end. I think this new group may be being used in some form. The Chouest group's offer is rock solid financially....and it's "liquid". "
"I believe that Chouest put the group together...and acts as it's leader. How the money is split up I don't know. I think it's a group of like 5 guys. In addition to Chouest, additional local money is involved...and possibly some out of state business connections that are tied to his marine business. "

Well, all of this fits with what I was told in my phone call yesterday. The only thing that's really new is Larry Benson and Raj Bhathal being identified as Dunleavy's money men.
Here's the problem, and it's mentioned in today's Times Picayune article, Chouest apparently has had the opportunity to close the deal twice in the past and didn't do so because of price. He still has interest in purchasing the team, but it doesn't appear he's got the inside track. That's
a problem.
People have complained about info they've gotten in the news and on this site, but if you think about it, it's actually been pretty consistent from the beginning. It's just the timing that has pissed people off. The purchase has always been tied to the lease. When Chouest balked at the price in his negotiations with Shinn a year or more ago, that delayed things even more. But the essence of the story and the deal have remained constant.
As it stands now, the Dunleavey group is a solid frontrunner. I have no idea as to the terms of the "exclusive rights" to negotiate the final deal. I suggest that that only limits formal negotitations. People can always talk behind the scenes as long as they don't interfere with the Dunleavey group's rights, such as they are.
It's now pretty clear what Stern meant when he said there was a primary group with another group waiting in the wings. There's the Dunleavey group and then the Chouest group. On the surface, I think we all would prefer Chouest to purchase the team because of long term security. I don's see Larry Benson and the fact that Dunleavey's wife is from N.O. as being a whole lot of assurance of the group's long term intent. On the other hand, the Dunleavey group may be willing to spend more in running the franchise (that is pure speculation, btw).
I wouldn't be surprised if we don't know the final outcome for another couple of weeks. AND it could still be the Chouest group in the end. The NBA (Stern) is pretty shrewd. He may end up with what he has said he wants . . . primarily local ownership . . . AND a healthy profit on the sale.
ETA: Again, the team is not going to relocate. It will be in New Orleans for years to come. At least long enough to give the city a fair chance at supporting the franchise.

I don't know anything about the relationship between Tom and Larry Benson, but Larry Benson's group becoming the alleged front runner after Tom Benson was the alleged frontrunner that pulled out because of the NFL, seems more like Larry being a hedge for Tom. Will that matter in 8 years when Raj is 80 and Raj Jr takes over? Maybe not, but what little information we have now makes it seem like the Hornets will integrate with Bensons other investments to a certain extent just as if he had bought the team.
For now my biggest concerns about this group are Raj Jr and whether Dunleavy wants to be a Chairman of the Board type and keep Demps around or if he wants to be a more hands on CEO type.

Interesting thought. I have no idea.

Legitimate questions, especially the Dunleavey part. Let's just see how this thing shakes out. Who knows? If you think about it, the BP spill may have affected the future of the Hornets franchise.
