What needs to change? Saints typically have no issues getting good free agents. Players speak very highly of the franchise. Saints are a model of success over the past 5 years. Why are the Pels different with the same ownership and in the same undesirable city. I know the front office is different but what do the Pels need to do besides win? Is that all?

If Pels relocate to LA or NYC, they would be a model NBA franchise

Basically.

OP talking about this was always the case.

Saints built themselves up over the last 15 years starting with the Post Katrina run….Of course it helps when you end up getting arguably the best free agent in history….Of course that also said, the Pels have had 3 of the best top 3 draft picks in the last 15 years to build around and that’s a big difference.

It comes down to invested ownership, competent management, and consistently intelligent coaching. The Pelicans have none of those three.

Personally, i dont think there is much they can do. It feels like NBA players prioritize things outside of the sport.

The NBA seems to be much more focused on the belief that big market teams are the only teams that can contend and exist.

The nfl has teams like Buffalo, New Orleans, Green Bay, and Pittsburgh that are in smaller cities but still have massive followings, put up huge ratings in prime time games and have no issue attracting free agents.

Granted all those teams are recently successful franchises, so it’s likely just winning. But for some reason I have this perception that small market teams in the nfl are on a more level playing field.

NBA players are mostly entitled little shits that believe they deserve to play in big markets.

Even winning teams in small markets cannot attract free agents, he'll even big markets like Dallas can't.

Face it, in the NBA free agents will look at LA or GS, then Miami, then NY markets before they "settle" for a "lesser" team.

NBA contracts are guaranteed
NFL contracts are not

oversimplification but that’s the difference
NFL players typically have little choice but to make the best of their situation and thus, winning where they are is the goal

The NFL is based on fairness and parity. Things like non-guaranteed contracts and salary caps are hugely good for the game. Bleeding hearts make that issue about the owner vs. the player. In truth, the product itself receives the largest benefit.

The Pelicans will NEVER be able to create a sustainable winning franchise.

Nonsense.

Seriously, I’ve been wondering the last few days who has actually watched the NBA regularly and who is just bored from other forums?

Milwaukee just won the championship.

Who had to play Atlanta to get there, both non glamour market teams that built through the draft and made smart trades, lower key FA acquisitions.

They played Phoenix. Another non glamour market that built through the draft and trades.

Utah was the number one seed followed by Phoenix and Denver.

Denver is arguably the best young team right now with huge upside.

All of this is two years removed from Toronto, another draft built team that played the trade market right, winning a championship.

It is utter hogwash that it can’t be done. It’s been done two of the last three seasons and the greatest dynasty in the last couple decades has been the Spurs, another small market team.

Is it more difficult? Yes, but if you put the right people in charge from the top down, and a little luck(and New Orleans has gotten more of that in the draft than anyone in the last 15 years), it can be done.

Basically this. Im surprised no one has dropped the name of the person most responsible for this. Sean Payton. He built the foundation, and luckily he has a good front office structure around him. He is a top 5 coach in the league and its not debateable. Getting ireland in to help him and sustained success over a decade here has led to this being a desireable place for free agents. Pels need something simialr. Hire a top 5 coach, support him with a good front office and get out of the way

I am fine with guaranteed contracts, an injury could cost a player tens of millions of dollars. What I am not OK with is guaranteed contracts for players that are not willing to stay with their team that gave them those mega millions. I would make 2 changes to the current system.

If a player demands a trade then the team should be able to no longer guarantee the contract.
Allow some sort of cap relief for injured and cut players so teams are not strapped with huge contracts for non performing players.

This wouldn't be perfect, it could lead to someone demanding a trade then getting cut just to sign with the team that they want, but hopefully losing the max contract and getting a lower payday with the new team will be enough to keep players at home to make the best go with their team.

Until the media stops pushing stars to the usual destinations and making it seem you cant win a small market, it will always be this way.

Winning and a Coach that players in the league respect. That is all. Players will go where the money is as long as they see a real chance to win. Then a winner/star players can then bring in the fill in roster guys for cheap when winning a ship is possible

The Knicks and Clippers are examples why a team like the Pelicans will never be able to compete consistently. The Knicks have literally been the worst run franchise in the NBA for the last 30 years, but they were a blown pitch away from LeBron signing there. The Clippers were literally the Washington Generals before all the superstars that couldn't get to the Lakers decided to start teaming up there. Teams like OKC, which are run perfectly, are basically a clearing house for bad contracts and an accumulator of assets that they will never be able to keep long term.
