Amick: Lakers want Kyrie Irving, but significant obstacles remain

quote:

There is a sense of confidence, it seems, that LeBron James’ history with Irving and the prospect of them reuniting for a storybook ending would be enough to make this work. From owner Jeanie Buss on down — president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, James, Anthony Davis and the whole lot — the Lakers power brokers universally believe that the 30-year-old disenfranchised point guard from the Brooklyn Nets is the kind of player who would greatly improve their chances of contending for a title this season.

Oh, if only it was that easy.

It’s definitely not that easy.
quote:

The source, who was granted anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the Lakers were only looking to give the Nets the kind of return they’re requesting if Irving was willing to accept the two-year, $78.6 million extension they could immediately agree on as part of the deal.

The two first-round picks (2027 and ’29) and promising young players like Austin Reaves and Max Christie (to go along with the expiring contract of Russell Westbrook) might all be in play if the Lakers knew that Irving was willing to align his contract with that of James, his old Cavs friend and lead recruiter who is signed through the summer of 2025 (he has a player option in the 2024-25 season).

But Irving strongly prefers to play his current contract out with his hypothetical new team and sign a four-year, $198 million maximum salary deal that would be available to him this summer (because the team trading for him would also acquire his Bird rights). That revelation wasn’t a deal breaker, but it was an eyebrow-raiser. The Lakers, the source said, would offer significantly less in a deal if it’s clear Irving was only guaranteed to be a second-half rental.
quote:

Can you imagine the awkwardness in Lakers land if Irving winds up playing for the Clippers inside the same Crypto.com Arena where James and his Lakers are scuffling in these later years of his storied career, with their old championship coach from the Cleveland days, Ty Lue, surely enjoying making good use of Irving alongside Kawhi Leonard and Paul George? The basketball battle for LA has been so acrimonious in recent years that it’s the kind of subplot the Lakers surely want to avoid if they’re going to maintain a modicum of harmony between James and their storied franchise.

It’s cute that Kyrie thinks someone will give this to him after all the bs he’s pulled over the years lol.

If this is true, hate to see it

From Shams
quote:

The Lakers offered the Nets a package of Westbrook and two first-round picks in 2027 and 2029 for Irving in the last two days, sources with knowledge of the discussions said — to which the Nets informed the Lakers that in order to make an offer to get in the Irving sweepstakes they would require all of their young players such as Austin Reaves and Max Christie and pick swaps in addition to Westbrook and the two first-round picks.

Toni Davis and Harden caused this..

For years players were able to demand a trade, get media backup because "they want to go to a contender", and then behind the scenes, dictate the exact place they want to go.

Now teams seem to be going out of their way to purposely avoid the player's "preferred destination", especially when it's the Lakers

When you’re sitting there trying to tamper with every team’s players and openly trying to sabotage their team/season, other teams are going to start telling you to frick off

I love screw these entitled players. How many teams have been left to suck for years for doing those kind of things?

The team’s earlier deal for Rui Hachimura with the Washington Wizards already pushed some chips in. The strong possibility that the Lakers would look to extend Hachimura’s contract means that their salary cap space – which might have attracted a candidate like Irving out of hand – is now limited to smaller salary slots unless they decide to let Hachimura (who they traded three second-round picks for) simply walk. The rival executive also told SCNG that one of the franchise’s recurring themes in discussions of multiple possible deals is a desire to limit the hit on their repeater tax, which increases exponentially next year as they fill out a cast around James and Anthony Davis.

HAHAHAHA they’re not even trying to hide their cheapness anymore

Lebron going out there and saying he doesnt understand and how disappointed he is not getting kyrie.

How exactly is LA supposed to trade for a guy the other team was dead set on not trading to?

They'll never admit it but i bet LA cant wait to move on from Lebron

Reason that teams are dead set on not trading with LA is that they are piss poor tired of everyone trying to force their way to the Lakers for peanuts.

They blew their main load with Davis then blew their remaining load with Westbrook. They don’t have much more without giving up unprotected firsts and those aren’t worth much if they get someone who actually makes the team better by 27 or 29.

Main reason the “frick em, that’s why!” stance is taking place is a decided lack of assets by the preferred teams along with people being sick of this shite.

That trade is why their dynasty crumbled. they wanted a '3rd star' and pushed away all young depth or quality talent on reasonable contracts for a has-been.

Them also being broke and cheap fricks them over too, people forget jeanie buss' net worth is 500mil; she doesn't have stupid money. The league is lucky the Lakers aren't owned by stupid wealthy people like Joe Tsai, Steve Ballmer or they'd throw money anywhich way

Pretty much.

The front office wanted supporting players like Buddy Hield who provided the kind of shooting LeBron needs.

LeBron and his butt boy instead decided “Hey, let’s get Westbrook! Who cares if he won’t shoot deep or play well with us, we can just ride that shot to the playoffs!”

Which is why Lebron's "Maybe it's me" tweet was hilarious and lacked self awareness.

Yes dummy, it's you. It was always you from the very moment you facilitated the Russ trade.
