Sources: The protected 2022 first-round pick the #Hornets acquired from New Orleans in the Devonte' Graham trade will convey to two second-rounders if the Pelicans wind up in the lottery. Details explained here:

This make the trade an A. Graham elevates the team enough where we make the playoffs, then frick that 1st rounder.

Man, if that pick doesn't convey, that is not good at all for us as a whole.

No it doesn’t. Still was completely unnecessary and unprecedented for a player signing a 4/$47M deal to a team that had room to sign him.

I would have given it an A if it was top 20 protected.

This is that part of the offseason:

- People exaggerate how bad the pieces going out were

- People exaggerate how good the pieces coming in are

- People dismiss or rationalize the costs it took to get there.

The net effect is an exaggeration of how much we improved, a rationalization for how much it cost, and a disconnect between the perception and the reality.

We are a team that operated this offseason like we were ready to win championships, but ended up a team we are having to overpay RFA teams to fill the cap space we couldn’t with players that have free movement. From a PR and internal organizational trust perspective it’s a terrible look, and from a competitive standpoint it was a lot of assets to get, maybe, marginally better. But with some of the variables and unknowns, it could potentially be a pretty bad season.

You are correct, but it minimizes risk. People have been getting butthurt over Griff trading picks, but he’s yet to trade one with high end potential.

Getting deja vu from Demps era here.

Where everyone that wanted to defend Dell just kept repeating that who cares about potential when we got CERTAINTY!!

I think we're likely to miss the playoffs, than make them. So this is a relief.

Would need a lot of luck to actually be a top 8 seed in the West next year.

We are about to have potentially 7 of our own draft picks on the roster.

We never had more than 2 under Demps.

Demps never had a roster that was loaded with young talent, he just kept trading 1st rounders every season to bring in middling vets

It’s the amount of picks, he’s burned through 3 first round picks for absolutely nothing and numerous 2nd rounders. Maybe we could have gotten Sexton with those three picks combined, or another high upside player.

We were in the hole in regards to assets basically the whole time after Davis was drafted. We’re still +2 in first round picks, with 3 swap options on top of that.

A “valuable” first has not yet been traded. We’re in a situation where we have to attempt to win this season due to ridiculous demands from our young star. There’s a balance that it appears that Griff is attempting to strike between getting better in the short term, and keeping assets to make a move later down the line. It’s a shitty situation to be in, but it’s not the same as what occurred during the Davis/Demps era.

If this is true then we heed to take a looooong look at Zion and BI because they aren't who we thought they are if we're not a playoff lock if both are healthy at this point.

You’re right, we didn’t get back Jonas or Graham. Or is this where you make the argument that we could’ve signed Graham to the same exact deal without the trade and Charlotte wouldn’t have matched?

Also, not all first round picks are created equally.

3 first round picks and a swap for a one year rental and a RFA that the other team couldn’t afford to bring back anyways.

…I genuinely hate this time of the year because people around here are so incapable of seeing reality
