re: Why do so many people hate DMB?

I only hate their fans. My patience around a a bunch of Chads wears very thin.
They're probably not in my top 20 of favorite bands, but I'll listen to some of their older stuff every now and then, especially their Live at Red Rocks album.

Are we abbreviating every band now? Took me almost the entire first page to figure out who DMB was.

They're just kind of lame and boring. There's not much blood or balls in the music. I'm not a huge Dead fan -- to be blunt, I actively hated them up until a few years ago -- but they have some excellent songs in their catalog. DMB couldn't come up with a song like "Box of Rain" even with detailed instructions.
Listen to #41 on their first album and tell me if you still feel this way

They're not everyone's cup of tea but I like them. They were a huge part of my college days so there's a ton of nostalgia around them for me.
However, SiriusXm has a DMB channel all of this month and every Friday they do a live concert airing. The band is mostly flawless live. Dave's voice is the only thing that even remotely sounds off at times but he's never claimed to be a great singer and doesn't try. People mostly hate on the stereotype that surrounds their fans and they think Crash Into Me and Satellite is how they sound all the time. Busted Stuff and Stand Up have some really good songs on them.

He's alright, just kind of boring and played out from my high school days. A friend once bought tickets to see him play 3 nights at the Gorge and said he played the same set 3 nights in a row
The worst thing about DMB is when people refer to the band as just 'him', ignoring that the other members of the band are what make them unique. I get irrationally upset when I hear/see this and I'm not even that big of a fan anymore.

He's like Big Head Todd. 90's sorority music.

They are perilously close to a full out jam band.
"jam" implies group improvisation, no?
that would mean that DMB is very safe from ever being considered a jam band.

His voice is terrible and he's trying way to hard.

Live at Luther College is a great acoustic album.

I can understand not liking the style. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.
However, when you ask most people why they hate DMB, they say "because they fricking suck." I just think that's asinine... a line that everyone repeats because it's the popular thing to do. Every member of the band is incredibly talented. Hell, Carter Beauford is one of the greatest living drummers. Thoughts?
Do you have a time machine? "Everyone" hasn't been talking about Dave Matthews Band since about 1999. You'd probably be happier if you didn't go around asking everyone what they think about a festival band that peaked in popularity 20 years ago.

I don’t hate them. They were constantly playing in my Jeep (no shite) in college. 2010-2013. Loved discovering and getting into DMB. I just kinda played them over and over those couple years until I played them completely out. I’ll still listen to a playlist it comes on or we're driving.

I like DMB but I’ve just grown very tired of them and have gotten burned out. Used to love em.

This ones in my wheelhouse so thought I'd shed some light:
Full disclosure, I'm a big fan, have seen the band 16 times from 1996 to 2018. About 95% of the time, though, its only the live stuff I listen to.
Like many similar bands, the fans for DMB are a cult, many having seen the band 100-200 times or more. I'm not a huge fan of the fanbase, actually, the "Chad's" someone alluded to, jamming this bands music in the parking lots before shows, OR PLAYING IT THEMSELVES in gatherings in parking lots before shows, just brutal.
I do, though, friggin love the collective of this band, I'm not there for "a Dave show", its this band that though with an altered lineup, still makes phenomenal music on the live scene to this day.
Think they're terrible, just horrendous? Give me more than a handful of bands that originated in early 90s that are still packing arenas to this day? I can think of Pearl Jam, Tool, ehhhh drops quick from there. You may think they're awful, but the masses do not. Their ticket sales year after year speak for themselves, though admittedly dipped from peak in early 2000's.
Dave, lyrically, has gotten much weaker in recent albums, far cry from early albums, but musically the band is very strong. The loss of Boyd (for good reason) has been big, but what's taking the stage each night is still solid, albeit often not the iconic sound that made the band to what they became.
There was the mention of a 3 night set at the Gorge being the same set list; this just is not fact. Made me look, www.dmbalmanac.com is your friend (again, I said cult). Even with their smallest catalog, their first multi night stand there was in '99 it seems, was different set.
Dave personally writes each set list each night, something very few (mainstream) bands outside of say Panic, Grateful Dead, maybe Phish??, do because everyone else under the sun is cranking out the same exact set all tour long. I can't speak to the far, FAR lesser known (and relevant) bands so often spoke of on here and their practices, but it's pretty rare these days.
Carry on with the hating........

I understand being bored or annoyed with DMB
But objectively, they're far from "bad" or "vanilla" or "boring"
Songwriting was more interesting than 95% of what was happening in the same era, very good musicianship, very good and diverse and individualized live shows and quite different than any other similarly large act during their prime.

Check out some pics from a few of their shows in the last few years. The band is still selling out venues.
Mexico 02/14/19
Germany 03/22/19
In 2016 they did a concert at UVA where it all started:
Saratoga

I used to like DMB. However I outgrew DMB during my early college years.
