Dude, come on. Are you kidding me? GnR is one of the greatest rock bands of the last 30-40 years. They had everything. They weren't static either. Their greatness evolved. Appetite for Destruction is a landmark album. And so are Use Your Illusion I and II. And they are all great albums for different reasons. You have the hot sweaty, raucous, L.A. smut nihilism of Appetite, and the wide range multi-genre, epic sentimentality (and yet still raucous) of the Use Your Illusion's.
Go back and listen.
Not to mention the story of the band is great in itself. Each member was a great character.

boston could've been a near-contender if they released more albums, but even so, no one in nickelback comes close to having the brass balls of tom scholz. that said, they're (boston) still an occasional guilty pleasure of mine...

Nickelback was and still is, strangely popular. They have won a fair amount of music awards (which don't mean much), sold out venues and arenas all across the world, and have endless amounts of #1 hits.
Recently they have become hated because people started figuring out 1. how formulaic they are and 2. How douchey they are.
The question in the OP was more finding which band in the past was a one trick pony, that is now panned as such, and was a rather simple band for simple folk.
Care to give an input on who you think that might be?
