not necessarily defending the band, at least the later iterations of it. they were pretty good before DeYoung took over and ruined it.

A LOT of musicians and their work were not appreciated at the time. Zeppelin is very highly esteemed by modern critics (which does not include morons on this board).

Never listened to much Zep, have you?
Rolling Stone was notoriously critical of them, but others like Nick Kent were not. As their career unfolded, they earned the respect of more of them than not.

However, the premise of your question might be faulty:

The word "generic" implies unoriginality and the "cheesedick-ishness" that comes with said unoriginality. If Bon Jovi was the first Nickelback, by definition, they wouldn't be Nickelback because they were the first, i.e. original.
And maybe they only became cheesedicks after others followed in their footsteps. Is the first cheesedick, in fact, a cheesedick? Or do they only become a cheesedick by the cheesedicks that follow in their footsteps? Do we blame the parent or the offspring?
