I really don’t like country music - I’m more of a Pantera/Metallica/Megadeth and ‘80s hair metal guy. But my father had country music playing all the time in his shop, and my wife would always have it on in her car. And it seems like every time there was a song on that I couldn’t help but enjoy, it was Alan Jackson. Granted, some seemed almost like “novelty” songs, but it was enjoyable music. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an AJ song playing on the radio that I didn’t like. And listening to AJ got me to the point where I could enjoy some stuff from Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and a few others. Ended up taking my wife to Alan Jackson in concert and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. When metalheads are singing along to your country tunes, you’ve got something special going on. He also seems very authentic - tunes that could cross over without selling out.

IMO best voices were Marty Robbins, Ricky Van Shelton

If speaking just country music on a straight path then George Jones is the one. His voice is perfect for it and it drills home his music.
Johnny Cash was more of a Americana artist because he was predictable with his musical style which was different and a style which he helped create. He liked to do different types of genres. He left the country scene back in the late 80s when Columbia dropped him. The 90s to his death was more of his roots to rockabilly younger days.
Now for romantic country music would have to be Conway Twitty.

Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens are of the Bakersfield sound. Those two have really good music.

Who was the actual greatest country singer? The king?
Right below that is Waylon.

yes
if “best country singer” includes instrumental prowess, song craft, technical innovation, dedication to the authentic live show, and influence on the industry you need look no further than buck Owens and the buckeroos

Don Williams for me. That guy's voice was as smooth as a shot of whiskey.

George, Merle, Gene Watson, Vern Gosdin are some of the best ever. But for pure voice Ray Price is tough to beat.

If it wasn't for Hank, many of the other names mentioned in this thread would not have ended up in music.
If not for Jimmie Rodgers, Hank might not have been Hank.

quote:True. Although in reality it is more of a if not for Jimmie Rodgers there would have been no Ernest Tubb, and without ET there would have been no Hank.

If you’re only counting writer/singers then I would throw Eric Church in the mix along with Alan Jackson and Garth

Sad to see no mention of Randy Travis.

Marty Robbins deserves consideration. Country music legend, and part-time NASCAR racer.
