Who was the actual greatest country singer? The king?

The artist who had it all?
It’s not my favorite artist, George strait. He didn’t write but three songs. You can’t call someone king if they didn’t write.
Waylons bass lines get me fired up.
You have to have an acquired taste for George Jones and his drinking and cheating songs, but when you finally get it, you understand why everyone calls him the best.
Merles voice and the amount of good songs he produced are amazing.
I couldn’t get into Willie or cash. I know. I know.

George Jones or Merle Haggard. Waylon is probably third, although I like more of Waylon's songs than the other 2. I was never a huge fan of Johnny Cash or George Strait. Willie almost certainly the best songwriter of the group, but probably the worst singer - the "Bob Dylan" of country.

Hank.
If it wasn't for Hank, many of the other names mentioned in this thread would not have ended up in music.

Add to the discussion Lefty Frizzell.
I learned of Hank, Ernest, and other early country stars but discovering Lefty was a revelation.
He was Merle before Merle.

Merle Haggard easily IMO. Hank will always be the OG but merles body of work takes first place IMO
Eta: however according to Spotify, Alan Jackson is the best ever. Real hard to argue with Alan Jackson.

The one and true king.
Although The Hag is a close 2nd IMO.

Alan’s definitely up there. He had a lot of cheesy songs too.
Speaking of Merle, my favorite of his was “what am I gonna do”. His son did a great cover, and sounded the same as his father.
Best version IMO

Merle just for “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink”.
Plus a lot of others.

Merle is #1. This one kicks me right in the nuts If I could fly away
Waylon Wurlitzer Prize
Willie She’s not for you

I just heard the fly away song by Merle after watching the “Tour Bus episodes”. Good song

Merle Haggard for me, but there have been some great ones.

Alvis Edgar "Buck" Owens

There are so many good ones.
GOAT? Got to be Hank
Best Artist? Merle, Willie and Waylon
Best Voice? Gene Watson is pure silk. Merle and Waylon are so unique and easy on the ears. Alan Jackson probably the best of the post-90 voices.
I've never gotten the George Jones worship but a lot of people say he's the best.

Keith Whitley immediately came to mind
