Johnny Cash. He helped Haggards career immensely. Got Haggard to come out as an ex-con on his Tv Show, told Merle do it on my shoe and you wont be blackmailed or cast away in the music field.

Also gave huge boost to Kristofferson on the show as a songwriter sang his song (Sunday Morning Coming Down). Producers told Cash not to say line Wishin Lord that I Was stoned. Kris was in audience, and Johnny looked towards Kris aa he sang that line.

I don't even see how George Strait is in this discussion - he's not even the greatest country singer named "George", FFS.

To me, "Footlights" is a portrait of a man in agony and despair.

Based on regimented genre, I’d have to say Cash

Jones has better and more memorable songs. He has a better voice as well.

Strait is good but his songs don't quite catch the essence and meaning like Jones did.

Waylon (who is better than either George) says Once you’re down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the King.

Cash for a brief period was outselling the Beatles. Had his own show on a major tv network. Wrote a good portion of his songs and his band came up with the chicka boom sound.

Cash took over after Hank Williams passed away and helped save country music from being completely taken off the radio in the 50s by rock music.

One of the few artists to be inducted into multiple hall of fames.

That would be Porter Wagoner. She wrote "I Will Always Love You" about him.

Most hits, most records sold, largest crowd ever, most awards, longevity, hmmm....George Strait is the king.

-Strait holds the record for most number-one albums and singles, gold albums, platinum albums, and multiplatinum albums in the history of country music

-Strait has amassed a total of 60 number-one hits, giving him more number one songs than any other artist in any genre of music

-Strait has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.[ According to the RIAA, Strait is the 11th best-selling album recording artist in the United States overall.

-He has been nominated for more CMA and ACM awards and has more wins in both categories than any other artist.

-in June 2014, drew 104,793 people, marking a new record for largest indoor concert in North America

-Strait is third only to Elvis Presley and The Beatles with the most gold and platinum albums in the history of music

-is the only artist in the history of music of any kind to have a top-10 hit every year for 30 years.

And I left out a ton of stuff.
