I'm not talking your favorite band, but simply which band had the most talented musicians.

I know some people here think they're overrated, but I think it's hard to argue against Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy Page
Robert Plant
John Paul Jones
John Bonham

That is a pretty formidable list.

Arguably had the greatest drummer and bassist of all time in the same band.

Whats funny is that Lifeson can fuggin shred but he doesn't get anywhere near the recognition

Whats insane about Rush is that they make that sound and its only 3 people.

Hard to argue against that one. The band was a revolving door of insanely good musicians, not the least of which was Zappa himself.

Steely Dan. Not really a band in the traditional sense, Becker and Fagen chose the musicians they needed on a song-by-song basis to achieve the sound they were looking for.

Genesis with Gabriel and Hackett. His later career notwithstanding or perhaps because of it, Collins was incredibly underrated as a drummer. Tony Banks was an amazing composer and keyboardist. Rutherford was very versatile; Hackett was innovative and unique and of course Gabriel was an excellent vocalist and the consummate showman.

Brand X was an all-star band of jazz-fusion musicians plus the aforementioned Collins.

Mahavishnu Orchestra's lineup over the years reads like a who's who of 70's fusion (McLaughlin, Ponty, Walden, Goodman, Armstrong, Cobham, Hammer).

Dixie Dregs played everything from bluegrass to prog rock to jazz.

Neil is the best of all time. Period. End of story.

Geddy is a bad arse bass player, also playing keyboard and singing (his vocals did go downhill in later years)

Alex is also a brilliant player

Yes with Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, later Alan White, and others over the years is a strong lineup.

If we're talking strictly modern bands, then I would definitely agree with this.

If you are including songwriting I don't see how it couldn't be The Band or the Beatles or Zeppelin. Never really got into Rush but i'm sure they are up there.

Traveling Wilburys would be up there with songwriting counting and I think the Meters a worthy of some consideration.

ETA: Also Oysterhead - Les Claypool, Stuart Copeland, Trey Anastasio is a pretty solid percentage.

My first thought was Dream Theater, pretty much regardless of the lineup over the years.

Dream Theater. Definitely the most talented “big” band.

Haken carries that mantle for prog into the future though. Insanely brilliant and absurdly tight live.
