Are The Police in the conversation?

I go Led Zeppelin if songwriting included, Rush if pure musicianship. Yes would be 2A.

Sting’s dream of the blue turtles band with Omar Hakeem, Branford Marsalis , Kenny Kirkland , and Darryl Jones.
Bring on the night is a great album

Led Zeppelin, Rush and I would also include the original line-up of Asia with Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, John Wetton and Geoffrey Downes.

Either Megadeth

Or Megadeth

Dave + Jazz/fusion gtr Chris Poland and Jazz veteran Gar Samuelson
Or Dave + Lord Friedman

ETA: just realized both drummers (Samuelson and Nick Menza) are deceased...and Vinnie Paul (who was almost in Megadeth) just the other day.
Damn.

I checked their discography, and dat shite ain't happening. Waaaaaay too many albums

You can get properly introduced with one regular album (I'd suggest Permanent Waves) and one concept album (I'd suggest Hemisheres). If those pique your interest, then you can go further and see the evolution of the band. If they don't, you should just throw all your music away because your taste sucks.

Arguably had the greatest drummer

Let’s not forget Peart wrote 90% of all of Rush’s songs, as well.

Damn that's an odd assortment of bands. But I agree of the list. Don't know why CSN&Y aren't in this convo.
