I don't spend much time listening to either, but it seems to me that Tool clearly is the more talented group of musicians.

These analogies just aren't working.

Id say Black Sabbath is the Beatles equivalent for heavy metal

I'd say they're more like the Buddy Holly/Bill Haley of metal since they kinda' are regarded as the most recognizable early pioneers of the sound. Part & parcel of that origin is that Iommi's teenage injury forced him to detune his guitar to play comfortably, a technique that is now a staple of the genre.

The issue with trying to find a "Beatles" of metal or compare Tool/Metallica (explained earlier) is that the genre is way, way, way too diverse to have a penultimate band at its core.

There's the issue of "who was the first" in one of the sub-genres which can't be confused with who is the best in each of them. Any one with an ear for musicianship and song structure wouldn't call Metallica's pre-"...and Justice" discography "music for meatheads". They were one of the early (and probably most recognizable) pioneers of thrash metal on the shores of the U.S. They influenced plenty of bands; this is no secret and other artists have revealed as much in interviews. Did they start a steady, downward trajectory with the "Black" album? Of course they did. But that doesn't undermine what they did before that.

Likewise, Tool was largely slept on before the "Undertow" album and even then, a lot of folks didn't start paying attention until the "Sober" video, which did a lot to pique folks interest. They probably reached peak popularity sometime around "Aenima" and by that time, they were largely categorized as a metal band. But, again, it doesn't take an erudite listener to discern that a goodly amount of Tool's discography incorporates elements from various genres; their lyricism and symbolism has also been of particular interest for people who follow the band. While I will argue that early Metallica definitely had its own "sound", Tool has probably solidified itself as a band that's been hard to mimic by anyone else.

Whatever the case, I don't see the point of comparing the two musically. As to the OP's original question, I'll say this:

Metallica had 4.5 great albums:
--Kill 'Em All
--Ride The Lightning
--Master of Puppets
--...And Justice for All
--Garage Days E.P.

Tool had 4.5 great albums:
--Opiate E.P.
--Undertow
--Aenima
--Lateralus
--10,000 Days

Which group is "better" is heavily influenced by people's listening preference. I think they're both equally impressive.

live, i admittedly had a good time seeing both bands. but truth is, i haven't really enjoyed much of anything by metallica in the last 20 years or so....by contrast, i'll still pick up any new music that tool releases.

as a lead guitarist, kirk hammett does nothing for me....sure, he's fast on the frets, but he falls back on his same tricks too often IMO.

tool did an awesome cover of "no quarter". metallica did a cover of "turn the page". let me repeat that: metallica did a cover of "turn the page". as if that song was itching to be covered. nothing more to say there.

the worst tool album is still nowhere in the same hemisphere as 'st. anger', which might have the worst snare drum sound in recorded history.

not sure about the so-called pretentiousness of their fanbase, but the vibe at the tool shows i attended was actually positive & upbeat, almost like a reunion among lost buddies....nothing like what i was expecting at all. nothing to do with their music, i know, but just throwing that out there...

for me anyway, tool wins.

It's 12:25 AM, my wife is upstairs sleeping, and I'm blasting Ride the Lightning. Metallica is currently in the lead.

That is the only way to listen to it.

Overall I'd take Tool. But nothing Tool has done can compare to Ride the Lightning. Every song on that album kicks arse without all that "art" or filler. Aenima is close but is it really necessary to label a track "Useful Idiot" or "intermission" or "Cesaro Summability"? I guess that what makes them Tool though.

But really, they are two different directions and I'd take Tool's catalog over Metallica's.

So Doc, what you're basically saying is that Tool is just another version of late 70's Rush.

hah, hardly.

tool is using fricking math equations for time signatures

rush was never on that level, and I like rush. and yes.

Let me know when geddy lee brazilian jujitsu submission holds a fan that jumps up on stage for 10 minutes and sings to him awkwardly.

That was me just throwing that post out there for you. *hooked*

See now, I know you haven't listened to much Rush or somehow you think alternating 5/8 and 7/8 makes you a better band.

Yes, I listened to Keenan on Joe Rogan's podcast too.

Exactly. Nothing compares to hittin the coast, sparking a fat one, drinking a cold one, surfing some gnarly waves and rocking out to Ride the Lightning. That early 80s California rock sound is awesome.

Overall, I'd say Tool.

But nothing beats Master of Puppets, one of the best albums ever imo.

i like 'ride the lightning', but i believe they were very much going for an "art-y" sound on that album, as well as on MOP and AJFL. hell, those albums were practically 'close to the edge' when you compare 'em to 'kill 'em all', lol....but they were still marching to their own beat back then, so the end result actually worked.

i will say this, though....metallica was one of the few bands that gave me the "holy shite!" reaction when i first heard 'em. i still remember picking up 'kill 'em all' on vinyl during the band's megaforce days, and at that point, motorhead was my benchmark of heaviness. when i heard "hit the lights", i started laughing my arse off, but in a good way...i was floored by the audacity & ballsiness of that track, and the best part was that it didn't stop there

i know alot of people love the black album & stuff after that, but it wasn't "my" band anymore from that point on...i could get that same void filled by countless other bands, so my opinion of that album was one big "meh"....

This makes me go from indifference toward Tool to outright hating them. That's the kind of music that makes me puke in my mouth.

Metallica has the better catalog just because it includes Master of Puppets, one of the single greatest albums ever recorded by humankind. (But I will stand up for the later work for being much better than its given credit for -- sorry that 40 year olds didn't want to keep playing thrash)

i'm OK if they don't want to play thrash anymore...many bands evolve, nothing new there. it was their desire to appeal to bored suburban housewives that i had a bigger issue with...

Some of us 40 year olds still do want to listen to thrash and, objectively, everything they put out from the Black album and beyond sucks unless you enjoy music with very little effort given to it.

Also, you must absolutely fricking HATE Meshuggah if odd time signatures bother you.
