Agreed, but a great album.

Tough choice... I'd love to say Tool being they are prob my favorite band, but pre-load Metallica is no slouch.
The problem with a lot of Metallica's 80's stuff is a lot of it sounds the same. Not saying its bad, but its all similar heavy rifts.
I guess I'd have to say Tool by a very small margin.
Agreed 110%.

Exactly....he obviously meant St Anger.

I wasn't really into Metallica until I heard St. Anger. When I heard that album, I said to myself, "This is what it is all about."
"My lifestyle determines my deathstyle." Deep shite right there man.

Hellz yeah. That snare sound they got is legit. Maynard probably wrote half of Undertow after Hetfield and Co. ran a train on his whiny arse.
Metallica really found something special post And Justice for whatever it was.

Troof. Buncha emo lady boys in Tool. Danni Carrie (nice girls name bruh) cuts himself at night knowing he will never be half the drummer Lars is.

Lars is the most overrated drummer there is. Metallica is one of the most overrated bands ever

Some of the pro-Metallica responses in this thread are hilarious and must be feeble attempts to troll.

Now? Yeah. He was a HUGE influence on lots of guys though. His work on their early stuff is great too. Lars has a really good style and fits perfectly with them.

Well yeah, but you can say that about any huge band that has been around that long.

Mark me down for Metallica.
As for Lars, he's great when he's not talking.

I agree. What I always say is that he was the right drummer for the band and that makes him a great drummer in the most important context.

I know its cool to hate on Metallica but the fact is, they're the Led Zeppelin of their time. If Zeppelin had continued on and put out some shitty albums, all the cool kids would hate on them too. If Metallica had broken up after the black album they'd be almost universally loved by rock fans, same as Zeppelin is now. Timing is everything.

TOOL is an amazing progressive rock/metal band(I have seen them 5 times) but you can't argue with the first 5 Metallica albums in the 80's(I am including Garage Days-not the Black Album).
Metallica completely changed an entire genre of music & turned it upside down. They changed the entire game. I know starting with the Black Album in the 90's they dumbed themselves down to the mainstream but you can't expect a band to stay the same as much as we want them to.
Ask a member of any metal/trash band & they will tell you that Kill' em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Garage Days, & And Justice for All are the pattern by which progressive metal are composed. They took the progressive energy & speed changes of Iron Maiden & combined it with the rawness of Motorhead to get the sound that changed metal. Metallica hands down. I just thank Pantera for keeping it going while Metallica took their 90s sabbatical before coming back strong after Newstead left(He had no choice.)

I always thought Metallica was a) corny and b) induced ear fatigue.
Tool (while I no longer enjoy due to the ultra dark/negative content of their music that no longer appeals to me) had great dynamics, wonderful imagery and were more believable.

Maybe, maybe not. Allow me to present Exhibit A.
