Indubitably.

Metallica was one of the best things going in the late 80s, and they did have an incredible influence for a while. Their first three albums are as good as any in another acts catalog and are better than most. But they were not alone. Megadeth, Slayer, and a number of other bands were getting the message out too. Metallica only went into total over saturation when they went for the mainstream and took the complexity out their music after Cliff died. Popularity doesn't necessarily equal quality to anyone with discerning taste.

Some of the best concerts I've been to have been for both bands, but I would not have any interest in seeing Metallica at this point. St. Anger was horrid, and Death Magnetic was a pathetically forced attempt to get back to a place they'll never reach again. It's one cliche after the next.

Tool is coming from a totally different place than Metallica. Far from being pretentious, their last album was just a natural progression of their art. Unlike Lars and the rest of Metallica, the members of Tool actually work at their craft and are constantly striving to be better musicians, even at this age and point in their career.

Metallica's been on cruise control for almost a quarter of a century. Tool is still reaching for new heights. This debate is so lopsided as to not even be a contest at all.

Metallica and it's not close. The question is borderline absurd. The first three Metallica albums (Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets) are cornerstones for an entire genre of music. I don't actually think Tool fans can admit that any of their albums carry that kind of weight (Yes, even Undertow).

Awesome is not even an adjective in Tool's vocabulary. They know two words, dark and brooding. Tool fans bring the band down more if anything. One of the most obnoxious set of fans in music.
