Chesney and Paisley aren't the worst offenders (and Paisley is a genuine musical talent) - but they both participated heavily in the move toward selling tropes and bumper sticker slogans as country music. Which I would argue paved the way for what we see now - selling this generic crappy lifestyle country music over and over in repackaged form by inauthentic dudes.
mike drop.
Chesney's original stuff was really good. Then he decided he wanted to be the next Jimmy Buffet. Thanks Kenny, but we already have one. And hes great cause he's original. You're just some hick who decide to start crooning about the beach and hawking Corona beer. Go back to Tennesse and sing about life as a country guy, not a beachcomber.

I've listened to a lot on YouTube as well, he's great. Thanks Yellowstone for introducing me to Bingham and a few other artists that would never get radio time.

Because my kids are all musicians, they make me playlists of great current stuff that's up my alley. The stuff they send me tends to be obscure though.

There has always been terrible components of country music. Rhinestone cowboy ty0es for example. Garth is considered the break between Outlaw and traditional in the mainstream. The rise of pirating music is another theory on why all genres merged. The music industry has less cash flows and refuses to take risk.

Good country music is out there if you want to find out!

It didn’t happen with Garth Brooks. It happened because everyone tried to be Garth Brooks.

Two more examples that make one ask the same question .

I despise country music. However, there is a segment of the population that will eat up any country song as long as it contains any of the below "catch words" that is now a requirement:
Trucks
Tractor
Beer
Drinkin
Mud
Whiskey
Boots
Tires
Fishin'
Huntin'
My Daddy
6 pack
Jeans

On October 13, 1975, the man voted Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association of America one year earlier stood onstage at the CMA awards show to announce that year's winner of the Association's biggest award. But a funny thing happened when he opened the envelope and saw what was written inside. Instead of merely reading the name "John Denver" and stepping back from the podium, Charlie Rich reached into his pocket for a cigarette lighter and set the envelope on fire, right there onstage. Though the display shocked the live audience in attendance, John Denver himself was present only via satellite linkup, and he offered a gracious acceptance speech with no idea what had occurred.
So, are you saying your going to set my country music award on fire?

They are the closest we have, baw. Carly Pearce(WOOD) is pretty good, also.
Miranda is more traditional, granted, but there is a reason Carrie has sold 70 MIL albums and sells out stadiums.
And Carrie has legit one of the best voices on Earth.

i've gotten into a few myself, but texags had a great list a while back:
Jason Isbell
Reckless Kelly
Turnpike Troubadours
American Aquarium (especially their most recent stuff)
Colter Wall
Flatland Cavalry
Hayes Carll
Ryan Bingham
Justin Townes Earle
Chris Stapleton
Tyler Childers
Whiskey Myers
Read Southall Band
Zach Bryan
Zane Williams
Shane Smith and the Saints
Charley Crockett
Corb Lund
all of those are not going to be everybody's taste, but there's enough "not shitty" country there to enjoy if you really like it. there's a few on there i don't like, but it was a good starting point.

There is a good bit of good music that is not on the radio, TX country and similar. Mainstream hasn't been listenable since 2000.

Garth Brooks
Yet being an act/fraud/phony is nothing new, I just don’t care for it any more.
Good story tellers are one thing, but shitty cliche pop garbage is another.
