hot take - it's not that sad of a song in my opinion, and certainly not in discussion for saddest song ever. dude gets divorced and cant let it go. in fact, might not have even been a divorce. might just be some chick he dated. good grief bro, get yourself together.

I don't find it particularly sad either....it is a quintessential country song with every T dotted and I crossed though.

Johny Paycheck's "Old Violin" is disturbingly sad...its WAAAAAAYYYYYYY more than lost or unrequited love...it is a life completely wasted, full of regret and self incrimination and nearly over. It is truly music to slice your wrist by. It may have something to with Paycheck dying just a few weeks after recording it but it is HAUNTING....

“Believe” by Brooks and Dunn for the message and quality of the vocals.

The song I’ve never understood why it didn’t get airtime is “Sweet” by Toby Keith. My daughter always wanted to hear it on the way to school back in the day!

This is one of the songs that Bob Dylan writes about the most, in his book " Philosophy of Modern Song.

I saw Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills mentioned. The Carter Family must be included.

Why is it “He Stopped Loving Her Today?”

And why does it almost make me cry like a little girl damn near every time I hear it?

I was curious what ChatGPT would say... "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was the first of the four songs mentioned in the reply.

As a retired trucker, I would be amiss if I didn't mention the following:

Six days on the road, Dave Dudley

Convoy, CW McCall ( a song that was very instrumental in me choosing the trucker life)

Phantom 309, Red Sovine

Finally tearjerker Teddy Bear, Red Sovine
