FWIW, I am on your side and have wondered the same thing about their massive following. I watched the first Sonic Highway series and Dave seems like one of the top 15 guys living right now that I would like to drink a beer with, but I just can't connect with the music. Having said that, several of my friends that have similar musical tastes as me love em, so I guess I'm just gonna go ahead and shove my opinion up my arse.

I enjoy their music. It has been consistently good for 20 years. I really enjoyed the one concert I got to see with them (Jazz Fest a couple years ago).
What I don't get is the love for "The Black Keys". Their songs seemingly refuse to rock (except for "Little Black Submarines"

OK, I'll defend them:
I think there is a lot of respect there for Dave Grohl. And a lot of respect for the authenticity of the music. Especially against the backdrop of a relatively shitty era in popular music, Foo Fighters stand out as an explosive live act, with a solid catalogue that has never really veered off track. And they have that great melodic instinct that is their own distinctive sound, they use crescendo as emotional effect about as well as anybody else, the lyrics are relatively smart, there is a lot to like there...
I think there is a lot of respect there for Dave Grohl. And a lot of respect for the authenticity of the music. Especially against the backdrop of a relatively shitty era in popular music, Foo Fighters stand out as an explosive live act, with a solid catalogue that has never really veered off track. I'm not a big Foo fan, but I would,agree with almost all of this:

And Dave seems like a genuinely cool dude who loves his job and has a deep appreciation for those who paved the way for him. I also like that he hired a guitarist from the Germs and the bassist from Sunny Day Real Estate for his post-Nirvana band. Foo doesn't really turn out music I like all that much, but I don't hate it, and I'm not really the intended audience. They do what they do real well.

This is a tough one. I cannot stand the Foo Fighters music but I do not hate the band either. I think this is a band that just plain understands the business of rock and roll and making money in music. These are not ignorant, uninformed human beings. They know how to make music that offends no one, yet doesnt overly excite anyone either. They do not cause a political stir. They don't try to change the world (U2) and they're not as self involved as a Coldplay....and they know how to inject humor into what they do and show a respect for the history of music.
If a band like Queens of the Stone Age could do all that and want to be in the public spotlight all the time, I think they may be the biggest conventional radio friendly rock and roll band but Josh and Dave are vastly different.
I'd have to go to Hansel from Zoolander on this one, "Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that."

Anyone who says "The Colour and the Shape" & "There's Nothing Left to Lose" aren't great records are fricking morons...
The follow ups to these have all been solid as well..."Wasting Light" was really good IMO.
It's nearly impossible to churn out great record after great record for nearly 20 years...
Grohl has consistently been involved with innovative stuff in the midst of a current stagnant and sad music industry...

only group I know of not from the 70's to have some classic rock songs that remind me of the 60's and 70s straight ahead rock
plus I like them cuz they pay homage to Captain Beyond
that group that they are a spinoff of, do not understand at all, even though they are suppose to be all that

And sdre's drummer, who left the foos after he found out grohl re-recorded all his parts on the second album.
As a huge sdre fan at the time, ive always held a grudge for dave sortof breaking up my favorite band, but those first two foo fighters records are classics.

Wasn't a huge fan of One by One, In Your Honour or ESPG, but all three albums had good songs on them. All My Life, Best of You and Pretender are all must-plays at their shows and compliment their older/newer stuff well. Wasting Light was my favorite album from them since TINLTL, really solid all around.
They're just a really good rock band. You don't ever hear of them doing anything super douchey, and they consistently release good music. Is it super innovative and creative enough to appease the music snobs? Probably not, but frick them anyway. I don't listen to Foo Fighters for a transcendent sound; I listen to them because they've been killing it for nearly 20 years. I don't know how great they were live in 1996, but they couldn't have been much better than last night at Voodoo.

... and recorded his own drum parts on the 1st. So SDRE's drummer never appears on a Foo record.
He didn't break SDRE up, Jesus did. The band had already broken up because the lead singer wanted to pursue Christian music, and felt that he could no longer do that within the confines of a SDRE. Just a weird breakup. Dave swooped in and gave them jobs.
