I am a Gibbard fan, but what they do with percussions is a no go for me.

throw a dart at the discography of the Beatles or The Beach Boys and you’ll wind up a winner

especially The Beach Boys…Brian Wilson is the archetype for “perfectly crafted songs”

I'd ask what you think the criteria are? Is it the songwriting itself, the production, the performance or a combination of all three?

A combination of all three was my intent when starting this thread. My pick of "Head Over Heels," for instance, is excellent just as a song, but the quality of the recording, plus all of the little instrumental flourishes and layers that they added into the finished product, turn it into something really special.

. My pick of "Head Over Heels,"

Great choice!
Love that song

Our choice doesn’t have to be an old song from the 60’s or 70’s. Plenty of well crafted newer songs like that Postal Service song. That’s a great song.
I'll add The Black Crowes- Remedy

I would and could pick a song from Mumford and Sons but all hell would break loose on here so nah!

"Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears as a contender.

The whole album really.
Shout is so great in how it starts off immediately strong and deliberate, yet the building instrumentals raise it even higher as it goes, with some clever breaks throughout to catch your breath.
Head over Heels with Broken (reprise) is so great.

LA Woman The Doors is a good contender as well.

Hotel California has to be up there.

One - Metallica, the slow to rage buildup is pretty damn epic.

"Shout" by Tears for Fears is far better than "everybody wants to rule the world" and "Head Over Heels."

I sat down and listened to Shout with headphones the other day (don't think I ever have). And it is such a great, well crafted, song.

But as for my pick, it would have to be something from Floyd. So many great ones. I could say "Time" or "Money" or any number of others. But I'd probably pick "Shine on You Crazy Diamond."

Shout is my least favorite song from them. The chorus is just terrible. Head over heals isn't great either. Tope tier are EWTRTW, Change and Mad World.

Every eagles song is perfectly crafted. Especially the Joe Walsh written ones. In The City is a perfectly crafted song.
