I thought about asking "what is the most perfectly crafted pop song?" but I didn't want the thread to get bogged down over arguments about whether particular songs are or are not "pop" music. So I decided to broaden the question, and for the sake of discussion we will define the rock era as beginning in 1955 and continuing to the present.

I'd ask what you think the criteria are? Is it the songwriting itself, the production, the performance or a combination of all three?

For me some of the most prefect songs would be "A Day in The Life","Something", "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations", "Sympathy For the Devil", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Live On Mars". "Ballad of El Goodo"... actually I could go on for days.

As fr a perfect album, I'd nominate Ten Summoner's Tales. For my money that album is such a perfect mesh of amazing songwriting, fantastic performances and brilliant production, from start to finish.

Caroline No - this is Brian Wilson's ultimate song or
Strawberry Fields which is still an unbelievable record.

I have thought about it some more, and Go Your Own Way and Limelight may be better choices.

I've always thought "I'll Wait" by Van Halen was a PERFECTLY crafted song from the buildup in the intro, all the way through the outro.

Rock and roll versions of the Hollywood "epic" that have become endearing legendary tracks are going to rise to the top of these lists because they had to resonate and bigger songs tend to be crafted better.

American Pie - Don McClean
Stairway - Zeppelin
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
A Day in the Life - The Beatles
Hotel California - The Eagles
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

That would be my short list to start.

Personal favorite is Little Black Submarine by Black Keys, then they fell of hard

Probably Hotel California is the obvious answer

Another good one is Blackbird by Alter Bridge

Heroes by David Bowie is one of the most beautifully produced songs ever.

It is somewhat of a cliche that 80s songs are all "overproduced", but this one both embodies and defies that near slur. It is a wonderful song from a better, vanished time.

Beat me to it. I love that song. I got to see it live several years ago and it was pretty much the only good part of the show.
