I saw Ted Nugent in a high school stadium in 1978 in Bay City, Michigan. Cheap Trick was the warm up and Van Halen warmed them up!

I think the Cars opened for Van Halen on their first headlining tour.

I like "Unchained" just fine, but IMO "I'll Wait" is their best-by far.

"Apart from maybe Jimi, IMO, no one has had more influence on rock guitar than EVH."
.. you are kidding with this statement, correct?
These people were much more influential:
1. Les Paul - who was EVH's hero and main influencer.
2. Jeff Beck
3. Pete Townsend
4. Robert Johnson
5. Carl Perkins
6. Jimmy Page
7. John McLaughlin
8. Carlos Santana
9. David Gilmour
10.Leslie West
11. Johnny Winter
12. Robert Fripp
13. Marc Bolan
14. Peter Green
15. Eric Clapton
16. Elmore James
17. Bo Diddley
18. Tommy Iommi
19. Chet Atkins
20. Duane Allman

I don’t often literally laugh at posts, but I just spontaneously blurted out a good chuckle when I read that.

I didn't know that. I LOVE a lot of his songs solo and with the Doobies.

I was just 12 years old and my older sister had bought this album. I put it on her turn table and was instantly turned on to a whole new world of music.

you could ask 20 VH fans and probably get 20 differnet anwers on "best". Obvioulsy very subjective of course. But to me 1984 got a little too "poppy" and mainstream. Diver Down had that as well but it was a lot of covers so whatever. But 1984 when they added the synth and more easily palatable radio tunes, it just didn't have taht same feel. I'll wait is a solid tune but it just doesn't scream VAN HALEN to me.

To me I'd submit "Someboyd get me a Doctor" as the most all encompassing best VH track. It has every single thing in it you'd want or expect from VH. It's pretty short so it can be easily listened to or introduced to a new person. Kickass intro that sets the stage for hte rest of it. Heavey guitar. DLR belting it out. An Eddie solo. Lyrics abotu partying your arse off. ETc.

Girl Gone Bad? Top Jimmy? Drop Dead Legs? House of Pain?

Nah, these are some of the most blistering tracks they ever did - especially Girl Gone Bad. It has the same intensity as Atomic Punk from the first album. Even Panama - one of the most "palatable" radio tunes, absolutely smokes.

Let me clarify my statement. I didn't say all of 1984 was straight up pop. I was sayign that their sound began changing with the modern times to incorporate more poppy type stuff. What really gets my goat about it, I think, is that 1984 is what really propelled them to the mainstream. They were certainly popular before then sure, but 1984 is when they hit the stratosphere and everyone across the world knew about them. And it was predominatnly because of their first #1 hit "jump", which I despise beucase it doesn't feel or sound like VAN HALEN. And the aformentioned "I'll wait" sounds more like something you'd hear from like genesis or somethign rather than eddie and dave.

That was my point. Just that their celebtiry and reknown took off exponentially as soon as their sound shifted to be less in your face kick your arse hard rock and more appealing to the genmeral public.

I remember my older brothers playing that album. VH had you hooked at the first listen.

I always think of that album as opening the gates for all the hair bands and SoCal heavy rock. It was a fantastic run.

DOA and Ain’t Talkin Bout Love are my two favorites. Still remember the latter live at the Centroplex in November, 1982 like it was yesterday. Got the crowd really involved.
