Start at the beginning. His self titled first album has some of his best stuff. His second album, Diamonds in the Rough, is probably my favorite. Just keep going from there.

He's truly one of the unique songwriters this country has seen. I see him as the Mark Twain of country/folk.

There are not many songwriters out there that can start a song like this.

LINK

While out sailing on the ocean
While out sailing on the sea
Bumped into the Saviour
He said, "Pardon me"
I said, "Jesus you look tired"
He said, "Jesus so do you
Oh, sit down son
'Cause I got some fat to chew"

You see, everybody needs somebody
That they can talk to
Someone to open up their ears
And let that trouble through
Now you don't have to sympathize
Or care what they may do
But everybody needs somebody that they can talk to

Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever captured the reality of the underbelly of American society like John Prine did. Beautiful songs telling horrible stories. He was at his best when telling the story of somebody on hard times.

Prine is songwriting gold man, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. If I had to pick one favorite song it would be Souvenirs.

I saw him a few years ago in Huntsville and didn’t know much about him, Jason Isbell was opening for him so I went. Fell In love with his music that night. Was one of the Covid losses that hurt the worst.

His son Tommy Seems to be following in his footsteps. “Ships in the harbor” is a great song.

Amazing songwriter.

Country Bob Dylan basically. Just didn’t really go electric.

I wish he would have done it. Not that it would've made his songs any better, it wouldn't have, but it may have attracted more listeners and kept serious lyric writing alive in rock music at the perfect time.

Imagine a collaboration of John Prine and S.R.V.

Some of my favorite songs of his:

Mexican Home

One of mine too, and so many more. Sam Stone is a masterpiece. Angel from Montgomery, Donald and Lydia, Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore, Spanish Pipedream, That's the Way the World Goes Round, Lake Marie... it just doesn't end.

quote:

Dylan praised Prine and revealed that his favorite song from the artist is “Lake Marie”, released on his 1995 album “Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings”.

“Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene.”

“All that stuff about ‘Sam Stone’ the soldier junky daddy and ‘Donald and Lydia,’ where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that. If I had to pick one song of his, it might be ‘Lake Marie.’

Where to start? - First album as others have said.

Ain’t Hurting Nobody. I play that one a lot.

His son Tommy Prine recently released an album that is getting good reviews.

.... could not agree more! Most songs around the early 70s about Vietnam were either super patriotic (The Ballad Of the Green Beret) or protest songs (I feel Like I'm Fixin To Die Rag). John Prone wrote Sam Stone about a war vet coming home to his family with a drug addiction. Poignant and very real story.

I could listen to "Lake Marie" on repeat. It's that good.

He sang a popular duet with my ex-aunt-in-law.

Anywhere.
You will wind up chasing his whole catalog.

As a note of trivia, the first three songs he wrote were:

Paradise
Hello In There
Sam Stone

How the hell do you pull that off and continue to produce the same quality over and over?
