Styx did 2 nights at the Saenger in '83. I was at Pat O's with friends one of those nights when I happened to glance over at a group of people standing around a few tables on the patio. Through the people I saw James "JY" Young, Tommy Shaw and I think one of the Panozzo brothers sitting at the table, so I grab a few coasters and head over for autographs.
This big security guy gets in my way as I get to the table and won't let me through. Pushes me away. I told him to settle down, I only wanted an autograph. He hollers at me to get away. This catches JY's attention, and he tells the guy to "stop being a dick, he only wants an autograph".
Tommy and JY sign, and as I walk away, I tell Baby Huey "it was a pleasure talking to you". JY and Tommy busted out laughing.

Met Little Richard in Airport when flying back home from L.A. He kept hand partially closed for handshake, but he had a handkerchief and could have been avoiding giving me his cold… dunno

Was one of the stage hands for a buddy that staged some bi-annual shows. My job was putting out fires, loose ends, electrical and so on. So got to meet a lot of newgrass/bluegrass performers. Doc, Tony, Norman, Sam, John Hartford and so on. Nothing professional just helping a friend with a dream to stage shows.
My fav was the night before a show Vassar Clements hung out with us. We were camping and had a big circle of chairs. And he was just wanting to check out the place. Making sure it was a go I guess. We we're swapping lies and he jumped right in. Pulled out his pipe (tobacco) and alternated stories with us for at least three hours. Entertaining would be an understatement and down to earth.

Was in Seattle in line at a small jazz club to see Lou Rawls when I noticed a very well dressed black gentleman directly in front of me trying to get into the same door to the venue. I leaned over and saw that it was Lou Rawls. I said “Mr. Rawls what an honor, I’m staying at the hotel a couple of blocks away and they told me you were playing here. It’s great to meet you” He gave me a big toothy smile and said “Yeah how you doing baby? How you doing?”

I was 21 yrs old & had been dating the (future) mother of my son for about 4 months. I had driven to her house in Cheverly, MD which was about 1/2 hour away, and about 10+ minutes from the now demolished Capital Centre. Not long after getting to her house she asked if I wanted to go to a concert, which surprised me since she wasn't much into music at all. Being the rocker that I was/am I said hell yeah, & we jumped in my trick-painted Z28 before I even asked where we were going, although I assumed it was the Cap Centre. I asked who was playin'...she didn't know or care, but said her brother was in town and would be there. I've been to probably a couple dozen shows there, (including my 1st ever concert - KISS / Bob Seger) and usually knew who was coming thru, but couldn't figure out who was playin'. Got to the Cap Centre and she directed me to a "loading dock" area, where I reluctantly parked. Got out, followed her to a door where a few people were hangin' out and I could definitely hear some music playing but couldn't make it out...she beat on the door and she asked the dude that answered if Jimmy Newman was around. He closed the door and a couple minutes later a different dude opened the door & said come on in. While introducing me to her brother for the first time, he was slapping a big fabric patch/sticker on my thigh. It was my backstage pass for Krokus "The Blitz" tour & Sammy Hagar's VOA Tour. Jimmy kept us toolin' around backstage for most of Krokus' set until the Red Rocker started makin his rounds backstage and I was able to get a intro, handshake, and an autograph on my thigh patch/backstage pass. I was beyond pumped, and went out front to catch a lil' Krokus and all of Sammy Hagar.
This was on Nov 1st, 1984 (i'm goin' with '84 for the "1984 was the best year ever for music" thread) which was the day before my 22nd birthday. The following day, my birthday, Jimmy, who worked for Winterland Productions, took me out to his big U-Haul truck and loaded me up with more Krokus & "I Can't Drive 55" merch than I could give away. Not a bad birthday at all.
Later on, I worked a Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton show with him...go figure.

Not my story, but a friend's.
He was/is a lawyer in Los Angeles and at one time had both Jackson Browne and Steven Segal as clients. Segal and Jackson Brown were also friends, or at least acquaintances. One time Segal was in the office and my buddy mentioned a party Jackson Browne was having. He said it was like the scene in Seinfeld when Jerry tells Crazy Joe Davola about Kramer's party. He later found out Segal sent back a guitar Jackson Browne had given him.

Met the bug-eyed singer of Cameo at Barts on the Lake after OMD/Depeche Mode in 1988. He denied it all night until he came clean as he stepped into his Limo to leave. Dinner with Randy Jackson of Zebra and a friend whose brother grew up with Randy, Guy, and Felix when he did a solo gig at the 19th Hole in Houston, was on guest list too, and Randy picked up dinner tab.

I worked in the Conference Center and Resort industry in Phoenix for 30 years. I've met countless musicians and celebrities.
The Gin Blossoms are from Tempe and guitarist Jesse Valenzuela looked me up every time they were there. Cool dudes.
Others I've met:
Marshall Tucker Band (had to run an errand for Toy Caldwell)
Steve Miller Band drummer
The Outlaws
Fabulous Thunderbirds
Weird Al Yankovic (one of the biggest jerks ever)
Gene Simmons (the other biggest jerk ever)
Dave Brubeck
Ingwe Malmstein (his wife is from Mesa)
Images of Eden (coolest dudes ever)
Social Distortion (very cool guys)
Slipknot (complete opposite what you might think - most cordial and nice guys)
B-52's (jerks)
Corey White of Three Dog Night - (cool)
Dewey Bunnell of America (daughter was going to Az State)
Greta Van Fleet (cool guys)
Mary Wilson of The Supremes
Andy Williams (arse hat)
Dave Brubeck
Rick Derringer
Chelly Wright (by pool in bikini)

He was actually well behaved, but he was fresh out of jail and in the same city that arrested him in the first place, so that made sense.

I sat at a table for a couple of hours next to Andy Gibb at Baby O's nightclub in Acapulco in the summer of 1984. Nice, friendly guy. He was wearing white pants, a white shirt unbuttoned halfway down, and about 10 pounds of gold chains around his neck. He was by himself and was trying, very successfully, to pick up women.
Sylvester Stallone was also in there that night. with his entourage. We would run into him several times that week.

We saw Ralph Stanley in Charleston. At the break they had their merchandise table set up and you went through the line picking items. Stanley's autograph on his picture was $5. When I got to him to sign the picture he looked at the stuff I had picked - a couple of CD's - and asked, "Have you paid for that yet?". Kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Great show though.

Something about him assuming you're a fan strikes me as egotistical.

It's Cory Wells, but it doesn't surprise me he was a good guy.
I saw them twice and he could sing anyone under the table.

Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes back in the early 90s . Met him one night after a concert in N.O. at The Dungeon . Great guy......totally off the hook that night with the rest of the band. He was f'd up and got more f'd up the closer we got to dawn along with the rest of the band except his brother Rich who was the only halfway non f'd up person. By 500 am he could not walk out of the place. Me and one of his people had to carry him out.....mainly because the rest of the guys besides his brother were essentially catatonic.

Yeah, forgot about Randy, but I've met him so many times it's hard to think of him as a celebrity musician. He's pretty much a regular dude and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet....same for the other guys in the band
