Blind Bobby Barker, Crippled Carl Crocker, Infirm Izzy Izzard and Deaf Danny Derwood were all in the Mississippi Delta playing hillbilly music. Which is especially impressive since they didn't have any hills.

Or billies -- the result of the post-Civil War anti-billying movement."

It won’t be too long and we’ll find some dude claiming Stravinsky, Chopin, Beethoven etc. ripped off the black man’s music too. Frick me! Lol!

What part of the Scotch/Irish influence was stolen from blacks?

The documentary explores the beginnings thoroughly and accurately.

No, not all about race, but certainly influenced by race. That’s undeniable

I thought the story of the Victor producer discovering the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers on consecutive days in Bristol, TN especially fascinating.

Rodgers was the first American rock star. Dude was living the life til it killed him.

Biggest take from the first episode was that Jimmie Rodgers was the first pop country singer.

If I remember correctly( I'm not able to watch the documentary until this weekend) Jimmy Rodgers recorded 23 songs on the day he died, gave up the ghost, on a cot in the back of the recording studio.

country music is the white mans blues and really always has been. that shouldn't be news to anyone as far as the origins go. and that's not being political. country is based off of the 12 bar blues scale with variations.

There is no disputing that.
It's funny, the misconceptions that people have, about the evolution of styles and genres. The separations happened a lot more recently than most people think, and some things that are accepted as "traditional" aren't really all that traditional.

To reply to a couple of you who mentioned Jimmie Rodgers, Clint Eastwood did a movie back in the early 80’s called “Honkytonk Man” which was loosely based on the story of J.R. Not the best Eastwood movie, but pretty good. Deals with a singer dying from TB just as he’s making the big time. Also stars Kyle Eastwood, Marty Robbins, and Barry Corbin.
