I’m crazy excited to see the Oak Ridge Boys on Saturday night in BR.

The Mighty Oaks - Leaving Louisiana

I can remember standing up in the back seat of our old Dodge, singing this song on the way to school in the morning. Think I was in 2nd grade.

The Oak Ridge Boys were by far my favorite group until Alabama hit the scene.

Have a great time. Jealous I can't go myself.

I can't believe anyone could complain about Emmylou Harris being on their television screen too much. That's like complaining that you have too much cold beer in your house.

This is worth repeating. That angel is welcome on my screen anytime.

Any mention of Alabama beyond the single blurb given during the final episode?

They quoted Garth Brooks as saying that when he had his college bar band, "We played more Alabama than Alabama."

Did Earl Thomas Conley get a mention? Or John Conlee?
No, and I noticed. No Gene Watson either or Cal Smith either.

Thomas Conley deserved a mention and let’s be honest.. three of the top sellers with the most numbers ones..

Conway, Strait, and Milsap were barely mentioned.

Makes zero sense!

Marty Robbins basically got stiffed too. He only closed down the Opry every Saturday night for over a decade by playing sets over an HOUR. LINK He was the king for a while.

I enjoyed it, but the glaring ommissions to endlessly lionize Johnny Cash was a bit much.

The next time I am in a conversation with what I believe to be an absolute idiot (i.e. the next time I wander into the politics board) I am going to remind myself that there was a time in this world where someone thought that having a bluegrass band with Vince Gill in it open for Kiss in the 1970s would be a good idea.

Jimi Hendrix once opened for The Monkees.

I've seen it speculated on other sites that they may have stayed away from Twitty because his estate, particularly his sons are a bunch of infighting, dysfunctional, fricktards who sue anyone and anything that have anything to do with Twitty.

Yeah, but Marty Stuart is named after him and he was on screen every thirty seconds so in a roundabout way he got more attention than anyone.

Audiences are unpredictable.

Marty Stewart mentioned opening for Earth Wind & Fire with Bill Monroe's bluegrass band and getting nine encores.

I saw Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets, open for Waylon Jennings in Lafayette. People were yelling for them to get off the stage. Jennings' association with Buddy Holly is legendary, yet these people didn't want them to play. Waylon eventually came out and played songs with them and shut the crowd up.

I loved the show but was very disappointed in the last episode.

I mean not only does George Straight hold the record for most #1 songs he has it by a landslide and you mention him for 30 seconds in the show? Get the F out of hear with that cr@p

They also didn't talk about the "Beaumont" Texas sound that was so popular in the 90's except to mention Alan Jackson and Clint black once.

How do you focus half the episode on Rosanne Cash and Kathy Mattea and talk about GS for 30 seconds?

They did cover him quite a bit in I think episode 4. The whole story about El Paso being too long and him saying screw you I am doing it anyway.

Anyone seen this documentary?

Winding Stream

quote:

This is the story of the family at the heart of American roots music - The Carters and the Cashes. Part history, part family saga, the film highlights a who's who of country music including Johnny Cash, George Jones, Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, The Carolina Chocolate Drops and more.

Trailer on YouTube

Sounds a lot like the conclusion to the final episode; wonder how much it influenced the narrative course Ken Burns took, or if it was just Roseanne bringing that in.
