quote:100% disagree. Don't get my wrong, I love the Grateful Dead, but I actually love Jerry Garcia Band and his solo stuff more than the dead. I'm pretty familar with his catalog. So you are saying that a guy that coverered so many bands and other artists in his solo work wouldn't want others to continue to play his music.
He and D&C in general are definitely not what Jerry would have wanted
You don't think he would be super happy that bands like JRAD exist today that are collections of some of the best artists in the jamband world getting together to recreate his music in their own style.
And you don't think that Jerry would be completely honored to have someone like John Mayer fall in love with the Grateful Dead later in his career and stop what he is doing to pay tribute to his guitar work and music for the last 7 years? Just doesn't add up.
FYI - I'm not very familiar with John Mayer and have only seen him with Dead and Co over the last few years. I was completely shocked when it was announced that he was going to be the guitarist playing and singing Jerry. But when I read/saw the interview where he described how this came to be (stumbled onto their catalog), I understood a person finally getting the Dead and wanting to explore their music and style for many years. I'm sure this path that he has taken in his career will be very beneficial for the rest of his career.
Also - I've been impressed with how he has played and sang Jerry - he is a very talented guitarist and disagree with the whole premise of this thread. Not sure how a guy that can play Jerry Garcia as well as he does can be overrated :)

What’s more, when Mayer did work on the record, he apparently cut the three tracks in just over an hour, hitting each part on the “first or second take”. It blew Clapton away, who commented: “I was gobsmacked. Really. I knew respect for John because he’s extremely gifted, his facility is phenomenal. He is a master”.
Eric Clapton’s 7 favorite guitarists;
Duane Allman
Muddy Waters
Robert Johnson
Jimi Hendrix
Prince
John Mayer
Albert Lee
Sorry about this thread bro. Sorry you judge guitarists by their spot in the pop culture. I don’t even know he’s a “ pretentious douche bag pop singer” because I just listen to the music and don’t have a subscription to People magazine.

I agree. I think Jerry is looking down and smiling from ear to ear for Bobby and the boys.

Mayer is pretty damn good with Dead & Co
This was a phenomenal way to end the concert when I saw them last year.

Bull Shite .... Jerry wanted EVERYONE to experience the phenomenon of the Grateful Dead.
He also realized the music and live shows were not for everybody .... people seem to either love it or hate it.
Jerry's happiest times were sharing his music and collaborating with other artists, regardless of their genre or background.
Bob has adopted this same vision and belief of sharing the GD catalog of music with EVERYONE.
Remember when Jerry and Sting sat in with each other on stage during the 1993 shows ? I do
Watch this video - Jerry and Sting LIVE - beautiful music

Then what are you listening to. Punk....metal ( the blues sped up) classical? Or jazz? The blues is sort of the basis for most rock music.
