John Mayer is an overrated guitarist
Posted by monsterballads on 10/12/22 at 8:06 am1274
derailed the blink 182 thread so i'll continue this here.
Is John Mayer a good guitar player? Yes. without question he is very good at what he does. I'll admit i'm not much of a blues fan, as I think the genre is worn out and tired.
I know that if you ever dare to say John is anything but guitar jesus on here, you get downvoted into oblivion but for those that actually play guitar:
Tell me how Mayer isn't a copycat wannabe of SRV/Eric Clapton?
All his licks/riffs are pretty bland and copy those that have come before him.
Mayer himself admitted he dropped out of berklee school of music because he realized there were many guitarists more talented than he is and he'd never be that good, and he just wanted to focus on writing not playing.
Yes, Clapton thinks he's a master guitarist. Clapton at least innovated.
To be specific, I agree that he's a master blues guitarist regurgitating tired blues licks over and over again. It's not creative or inspiring to me. It's the same old blues licks that have been copied for 100 years.
My opinion: John Mayer is the Eric Clapton lite of our generation.
Great guitarist but unlike Clapton, what memorable riff has he ever wrote?
Layla is probably one of the most memorable guitar riffs ever written in rock history. What substantial riff has john come up with that stands out? Again, he's a great guitarist that can fit in with blues/jam bands quite well. and that really impresses the masses. I just find him boring and incredibly overrated by the general public.

I’ll preface this by stating I am a big blues fan and I play blues guitar so the guys mentioned in your post, I have a soft spot for.
I used to not like Mayer but he is a good guitar player. He may not be innovative or have written timeless riffs like “Layla” or “Sunshine of your love” but one think I do appreciate about him is his openness about who his inspirations are/were.
He is very vocal about trying to bring more attention and popularity to the music that inspired him, that is not in vogue right now.

Agree. He is also one of the biggest douche bag musicians of all time. Not Adam Levine level but in that neighborhood.

Clapton didn't write the Layla riff, Allman brought it to the sessions. Allman allegedly based it on the vocal line from Albert King's As the Years Go Passing By, where he sings "There is Nothing I can Do". Page also allegedly borrowed heavily from this song for Since I've Been Loving You.

You could say Mayer is a pretentious song writer that is quite forgettable, and you would be more accurate. Calling him out as an overrated guitarist? No. That's just being petty. Like or dislike his music, his talent is unquestionable.

I explained why I think he's overrated. he's talented for sure. just bores the hell out of me.

Clapton still wrote a lot of great songs. Go listen to the extended versions of the Layla album w/ live stuff and you see he is a better guitarist too. No comparison between the two.

You literally said Jason isbell is a better guitarist, John Mayer is wank on guitar, and “any musician would agree”. If you’d like to walk that terrible shite back then you can.
I would say songs like stop this train, in your atmosphere, neon, edge of desire, are all “interesting guitar” parts. Every one of those songs is more intricate than any song isbell has ever put on out. It’s not debatable. I’m only bringing him up because you literally think isbell is a “better guitarist than John Mayer”, I won’t debate songwriting in that. The entire continuum album is full of absolute genius material but I really think you heard body is a wonderland and never listened again, because your take on him is really really elementary

He is a pretty good guitar player who realized more money is in pop-ish music than there is in music that actually lets you showcase how good of a guitarist you can be.

Thank you. It is getting really old. I am just so bored with seeing guitarists jam and noodle on same old blues stuff.

he is a better guitarist. he also is a better songwriter and it's not even up for debate.

i've listened. i've seen him live. just found him to be boring. just like I find phish to be boring and jam bands to be boring. technical ability isn't impressive to me if there's no soul behind it.

I said he wanks. it's tired old riffs rehashed. he excels in the blues genre with his playing. I just think it's boring.

i'll NEVER take it back. it's a hill I will die on.

Songwriting can always be up for debate. And while I do like some isbell stuff more than Mayer, the technical playing of a guitar is much less subjective. There is no accomplished musician that would think isbell is technically better than Mayer on guitar. There just isn’t. If you like him better or think it’s more “soulful” then that’s whatever and your opinion. But there’s nothing isbell does technically that a 3 year guitar player can’t, and that’s coming from a pianist. I play with people regularly that are technically better on guitar than Jason isbell, and it’s rare to find someone as musically gifted as Mayer. End

go watch his live videos of him soloing. a "3 year guitar player" isn't playing like that. he has a unique style. it's not the same ol tired arse white boy blues crap.
i've seen isbell live probably 10 times. his guitar work especially with a slide to me is 1000 times more impressive and interesting than anything mayer has done.
the end.
