The songs bro. His catalogue is ridiculous. He’s a melodic player and his style matches his songs perfectly. His guitar is an extension of his voice, he’s a crazy good vocalist, his lyrics evoke great images. As a guitarist he often underplays in the service of the songs, which is the hallmark of a great. He’s definitely a top tier guitarist, particularly when factoring in that he’s a singer songwriter. It’s a package.

And this sums up the thread and your take. You don’t like the blues so you are claiming a talented blues guitarist is overrated. You are wrong. Give it up.

This is confusing.

Is he overrated as Jesus guitarist or properly rated as a great/very good guitarist?

He’s a very good guitarist and a good songwriter. He’s in no way the best but has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and plenty of dynamics to play with any genre.

It’s all opinions. I’m not wrong and you’re not wrong. We’re just discussing opinions on a message board. Music isn’t a competition.

There’s no “best” guitarist. I just think one guitarist isn’t as great as the general public thinks he is. A lot of it has to do with the genre that he plays in because of how tired and overdone it is.

Songwriting is more subjective than guitar playing for sure. But you are without a doubt wrong about isbell being a technically more talented guitarist than Mayer. It’s time to put that opinion on the shelf.

what does "technically more talented" mean to you? that he can play scales faster? who gives a shite?

Mayer can't do the things isbell or trucks can do with a slide. I think both of those guitarists are "better" players than mayer is in that regard.

What a silly thing to say. John Mayer doesn’t play guitar with a slide why wouldn’t they be better? I bet Ben folds is better than both of them on piano too. No, guitar playing isn’t about speed, it’s about knowledge, dynamics, with crescendo and if that’s using speed then cool. There’s 10X the theory in Mayer songs. Even his early bubblegum stuff is extremely advanced while sounding simple.

Also I wouldn’t put trucks and isbell in the same sentence if you want to hold onto any shred of credibility

I agree with this, but just wish it was faster and that they would ditch the setlist and just play.

He wrote Your Body Is A Wonderland. He is a pretentious douchebag pop singer masquerading as a serious artist. He will be completely forgotten once his career ends. The opinion that he is a talented guitarist (which I agree with) doesn't change that.

I'm not a John Mayer fan, but the guy is slick and smooth. At least the little bit I've heard from him was.
I'm more into raw and nasty.
If I was into smooth stuff though, John Mayer is who I would be gravitating to.

Haha. Using these two in the same comparison is ridiculous. I’m done with this thread. Horrible take

Derek Trucks is in the conversation for greatest guitar player in the pop world right now. He is a generational talent.

I just wonder why it even matters.
We all should probably spend less time listening to other players, and more time listening to ourselves.

Never really thought about him as a guitar player. Just as this.
