You could say Mayer is a pretentious song writer that is quite forgettable, and you would be more accurate.
This is a pretty lame statement.

Mayer's guitar playing and music have gotten him more money and arse than I'll ever get, so there's that.

i'll give him this: his dating history is unmatched

No doubt! I do like some of his songs, and I don't necessarily dislike his music overall. I just find it forgettable for the most part, but the skirts love it.

My opinion: John Mayer is the Eric Clapton lite of our generation.
I mean, is this a slight to John Mayer? The guy didn't make his name by slaying at guitar, he did it by making soft rock pop ballads. His blues and Dead stuff seemed to be out of sheer interest in the music. The fact that he is considered a good guitar player is pretty impressive in itself.

What the hell is a blues major scale?
Please outline this abomination using numbers (and b and # where necessary).
ETA: John Mayer is a great guitarist. You just don't like him.
I don't like to listen to Dave Matthews, but his musicianship is out of this world. (See how easy that is?)

Layla is probably one of the most memorable guitar riffs ever written in rock history.
Duane Allman gave Clapton that riff

i could make an argument that dave matthews is a better musician and guitar player than jason isbell.

The major blues scale is 1, 2,b3, 3, 5, 6 and the minor is 1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7.

The main thing to take from this thread is that Clapton is actually pretty overrated, and while Mayer is very talented, has never really been propped up as the guitar god that Clapton has been.
Also, Isbell is a great guitar player. Don’t let politics blind you.

phenomenal guitar player. what it boils down to is me basically saying I prefer ones playing over another and some people don't like that.

It's funny how people can't make this distinction. Someone can be a great musician and choreographer who just doesn't write songs that you like. DMB is not for me at all, but I respect his talent. I feel similar to JM, although I do like a few of his songs. Stop This Train is one of the all-time greats.

You have to be self-aware to make these distinctions... Not a whole lot of that in this thread.

I think Mayer is a hellacious player but I am not a fan of most any of his music. IMO Buckethead is one of the greatest musicians of all time, but many would disagree (though I could easily make the argument if all you think he does is shred, you've not come close to hearing his entire catalog).

no one since the '80s have really been propped up as a great guitar player and i blame that on mid-to-late Gen-X through Gen-Z having a totally different taste in music.
Boomers have always believed the music from their day has always been supreme music compared to today's music.
What would you rather listen to?
Clapton, Hendrix, Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, AC/DC, Beatles, Rolling Stones, BB King
or
Anything considered "Bro-Country", Skater/Emo Rock Bands

Jason Isbell is a far better guitar player than the music he writes would indicate. Go watch any of his Instagram videos of him practicing/fricking around on guitar and it's pretty easy to see. He is a truly underrated guitarist, but he is not even in Mayer's realm. On the other hand, Mayer is a guitar virtuoso, but he is not in Jason Isbell's realm as a songwriter. I've seen them both live, and they're both likely douchebags IRL. my two cents

Clapton: great guitarist, perhaps slightly overrated if being judged against the idea that he’s probably considered amongst the the greatest ever and an all time top 5 or so iconic name. Anyone in that classification is probably getting a touch overrated generally.
Mayer: great guitarist. Probably fairly rated. Considered among the best of his generation but not among the best ever.
Isbell: underrated. Sneaky good as he never lets loose on his records. I think he is also amongst the best of the era as Mb notes he is both technically skilled but also does very well within the soul of a song when playing. Not saying he’s better than the best, just much better than most realize.
