While Mayer is vastly better at guitar solos, they aren’t everything in guitar playing. Almost every Mayer song is harder to play and sing than almost every isbell song. I like isbell, as a writer and fun show, but literally you’re the ONLY person I’ve ever heard present him as a badass guitar player. That’s not his wheelhouse. You can think he’s underrated and Mayer is over rated and Mayer would STILL be a better guitar player. How you play music and think like that is so suspicious

I don't know about over rated but I used to think he was just another run of the mill guy with MTV looks, but he's a
good guitar player.

just have different tastes my man. i'm not enthralled by worn out blues riffs played over and over I guess.

Go listen to the extended versions of the Layla album w/ live stuff and you see he is a better guitarist too.

The Derek and the Dominos live at the Fillmore album is some of, if not the best live Clapton playing ever. Was his absolute prime

Yep and it's awesome. Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad (on the Apple Music extended version not available on Spotify for some reason) is insane.

1) mayer is a douche
2) tedeschi/trucks/anastasio live layla at lock'n is better than the clapton original or any subsequent domino's live versions

Jason isbell used to be really good at guitar and he’d rip these badass solos out but nowadays all he can play is wuss music with his limp wrists

And he sucks live now btw he was better fat and drunk and sad than this new pretentious “make the world a better place for my wife’s son” bs he’s doing now

Isbell went woke. Everything goes downhill from there.

I think Mayer is awesome. Sure, does he have some bubblegummy stuff? Yes. But listen to his catalogue some time. There's a lot of good stuff.

You could say Mayer is a pretentious song writer that is quite forgettable, and you would be more accurate.

This is a pretty lame statement.

I think he's good at being really proficient at blues major scales and playing them in his sleep.
I just find all of his stuff to be boring. none of it moves me.

You do realize it's okay to not like his music or him and acknowledge that he is objectively talented and proficient?

Your entire premise is based purely off your opinion and what type of music you enjoy listening to.

I said he's a good guitarist and proficient. I just think he's overrated by a lot of people.

If you're a decent guitarist but your music sucks, does anyone really care?

Someone made the exact same argument about Steve Perry and Journey the other day. His voice may be passable, but their music was God awful.
