.. that it diminishes The Beatles themselves? Or just Paul McCartney?

To clarify, I am not seeking a debate on IF 'Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time' is the worst Christmas song of all time, because it obviously is.

But is it so bad that its presence retroactively lays its stank on The Beatles?

It’s better than “Last Christmas”, but that’s not saying much.

Was reading that the song brings him anywhere from 400k to 600k per year. So a lot of money since it's release.

I tend to ignore most of the individual Beatles solo stuff with a few notable exceptions, so the maudlin awfulness of "Wonderful Christmastime" never really took anything away from their stellar work as the Fab Four.

That said, I just heard this cover version for the first time recently, and it puts a classic Beatlesque spin on the song that I rather like.

Merry Christmas all!

I have to roll the windows down on my truck to get the stank out if it comes on the radio, no matter how quickly I change the channel. It is that bad.

Paul has always demonstrated that he is a musical genius but a lyrical putz. Easy to see why he and John made such a good team. Paul wrote the notes, John the poet added the lyrics.

It's a great example of why Lennon was the better song writer and Paul was an over joyous magoo.

I will never ever understand Lennon and Yoko. That bitch must have had the greatest puss of all time.

I was just clowning around singing it in Best Buy with with my 11 year old and changing the lyrics to "speeeending moooney you dont really even have" and various cheap and tawdry revisions.

While the hole time thinking wow this song really IS cheap and tawdry vs the Lennon "so this is Christmas" introspective more alternative approach that doesn't come across as total pop garbage. Hard to beleive it is even played as much as it does.

They balanced each other out. Paul had great pop musical sensibilities that balanced out John being overly artsy. John gave depth to Paul's music and kept it from being vapid pop.

A lot of great bands work this way, and ironically, it frequently winds up the reason for a breakup. The yin and yang pushes the other to greater heights, but eventually breaks down the band.
