Definitely Maybe and WTSMG are damn fine albums but they blew their wad too early to be considered a great band. Kilos of cocaine use and sibling rivalry is a hell of a thing.

They are awesome and remain culturally relevant

ETA Their music remains relevant
I’m also the guy that started the thread calling them the greatest band ever

Very much so... That's a hell of a 1-2 punch..

Unfortunately, it didn't last.. I don't think you need staying power to be considered great.. When they were on, they were fantastic!

The Gallaghers had a knack for matching simplistic vocal melodies with basic strummed chords. It doesn't seem difficult but making that compelling is actually pretty hard to do or every artist alive would have catalogs full of hit songs. It's something you either have or you don't.

Having said that, it's also something that can be fleeting, which applies to Oasis. And IMO, coming up with songs doesn't necessarily make for a "great band". Oasis was kind of a snooze in a live setting and didn't really know how to spice the music up with interesting musical moves.

They fall into the category of if you think you're the best thing ever, and you repeatedly tell everyone you're the best thing ever, some of those people will start to believe you.

I find them to be middle of the road. A couple of their songs I really like, but most are very meh.

If the Police or REM were great bands than Oasis is definitely a great band.

Noel’s solo career is on a Sting-like trajectory, and I think that adds to the Oasis legacy. He gets tons of airplay in Europe and Asia and either of his first two solo albums would have been the 3rd best Oasis album. Hell even Liam’s latest album was really good (someone on here turned me in to it) and that only gives them more credence.

Their reunion will be massive. And there will be a reunion bc Noel loves money way too much not to do it.

Hopefully. My wife was reading off all the acts coming to the venue she works at. I was really excited for Smashing Pumpkins. Asked who they were playing with a few days later and she tells me its Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds! She didnt even know who he was . As long as the set list is good, I'm almost more excited to see him.

If you are into listening to music, no. If you are into watching fights, yes.

Oasis and Guns N Roses are very similar. They both released debut albums that are undisputed classics. If Use Your Illusion was culled down to one record, it would be in the same ballpark quality wise as (What's the Story) Morning Glory. And the good songs off of Lies are about the same as the good B-sides Noel Gallagher whipped out in the early years of Oasis.
The difference is that Guns N Roses just stopped making music for years while Oasis made shitty, shitty records. In terms of damaging your legacy, there's really no difference between doing nothing and releasing Be Here Now.
I consider GNR to be a great band. Axl Rose and Slash are rock and roll icons. So are the Gallagher brothers. So I gotta say Oasis are a great band.

There’s something to be said for an excellent, timeless pop song. A lot of people knock them but the truly great ones are hard to repeat even if easy to replicate around a camp fire with friends.

I think they are one of the better bands to emerge since the 90’s.

In fact, I think the rock music in England (Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Charlatans, Blur) was more interesting and better than the 90’s grunge movement.
